As other reviewers have already expressed, it is as informative as a text book, yet as readable as a novel. Lot's of good info covering almost everything from A to Z. I generally agree with the previous positive comments, so I will not repeat them. The book does have two glaring omissions. 1. It never addresses the differences between a Mutual Insurance company and other Shareholder companies. I thought the author would have pointed out the advantages and benefits of a mutual company. He does have the definition of a mutual company in the Glossary of Terms at the end of the book, but he should have devoted at least a few paragraphs to this important distinction. Kind of like writting a book on banking but not exxplaining the differences between a bank and a credit union. 2. In the preface he states that Life Insurance is not an investment. He never explains this in the book. There is a lot of books and chatter about self banking using life insurance that he should have addressed. The author states that it is a financial vehicle that can be used to pay for education and many other things. That sounds like an investment to me. He should have shown the difference between an investment and life insurance.It easily deserves fives stars, if not for the two mentioned omissions.Thanks,Joe

Tony Steurs book is one of the most comprehensive and informative books on Life insurance on the market today. Tony is genuinley interested in the welfare of consumers money and dispels the myths on life insurance. I enjoyed reading the book It provided plenty of samples of policy illustrations and explained how to evaluate an insurance companies financial stability and their ability to pay their death claims. I am a Life Insurance agent, so I found it very useful in trying to understand the different types of policies and which ones to avoid and which ones that would be better suited for the consumer. Tony is a very intelligent man who knows how policies work and how to explain it to consumers and companies. I would give "Questions and ansers: Life Insurance" 2 thumbs up and five stars. If you are a consumer getting ready to purchase a Life Insurance policy or have apolicy thats up for renewal I would deffinitley reccomend giving this book a read.

I am a single woman almost 50 years old. I know I should know a lot more about life insurance but I don't. This book is a great reference tool. Now I know enough to ask intelligent questions when I shop around for life insurance policies.

its got good information, and is a good reference guide for the beginner or really for anyone who is interested in information.. while I find some of it doesnt really suit me it has been in my book list of witchy books for years and it does have some really helpful information that is written in a way that is super easy to understand.

This book gives a concise overview of the wiccan tradition. While it can not by far teach everything there is t o know about Wicca I found it a comprehensive guide to the faith. It's helpful and informative! If you are looking to learn the basics of Wicca this is a must read.

What a great book. It was actually recommended by a professor! This book sounds silly, but, it has everything in it that you will need to learn about the subject and practice it! It is written in a step by step format, making it easy for the student to follow and understand. The author does not write it to impress you, but to teach you; however she does both! For anyone interested in this subject, I highly recommend reading this book first, then follow the tradition of your choice. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I personally found this book to be written with great respect and encouragement for new witches everywhere.It touches on almost everything connected with Wicca. Each chapter serves as a solid grounding in its topic and a jumping-off place for more study.You get chapters on witches in history, sabbats and esbats, the Lord and the Lady, covens and solitaries, magical tools and costumes, the seasons of nature, the phases of the moon, astrology, dreams, divination, how to write your own spells, herb magic, candle magic, color magic, altars, magic circles, familiars, pentacles, and more.The authors write in a clear, inviting, friendly style. The information is so well-organized that only later do you realize what an exhausting amount you've covered. Throughout, the authors serve as guides, anticipating and steering you clear of pitfalls (such as ingesting unknown herbs or attempting to interfere with anyone's free will).My one disappointment in the book concerns its title: it's really about Wicca and does no more than mention other types of witchcraft in a brief historical summary. But I still found it a rich offering to pagans everywhere.

This book is among the stars of basic knowledge that fell from the sky. It covers in great detail, everything you need to know whether your just delving, beginning, or researching from history to the why's? and how-to's? I believe that if this book had a different title it would have to be labeled a grimoire. The compendium of information takes you from deciding why you are reading it's words, to the first steps of a witch's doing's, and through all the way through to the dedication and initiation rites if you decide to follow the craft. The Author doesn't preach to the choir, nor make biased opinions towards either side of the points it makes. The facts and teaching style of it's contents make it easy to read through as just a reference source, ending with reading being given a choice to continue studies or go on with their daily lives.

A great way to learn about different aspects of Wicca and Witchcraft. The subject is detail oriented enough to help out the common and beginner in the work of Wicca. It is good for the understanding the many facets that make up Wiccan Worship.

Haven't finished it yet but it seems to be another all around good reference book (as the Idiots & dummy's books usually are) I like how its written and presented. Good all around book on Wicca/witchcraft

I vote for the person and not the party and over the past six decades plus of voting my record has been about 50/50 as to which party candidate I voted for. I pretty much hold both parties in contempt and go for the candidate rather than the party.That being said...when I found that this work had been put on the “Trumpster Index Expurgatorius....well I had to purchase it and read it despite my distaste for this sort of work. I wondered why this man(?) so badly wanted to stop this books publication...what did he want to hide?I, like many others here take works such as this with a grain of salt. But I will tell you that if even a small fraction of the information presented here is true (and I have no doubt it is) then it makes my blood run cold. Now I am not one of those who feel that the circus which is Trump will bring down our nation. Hey, we survived bad apples before such as Harding, Andrew Johnson, Pierce, Fillmore, Garfield, et al and of course we will NOT be able to fully assess Trumps impact upon our nation for at least fifty or seventy five years from now, but even leaving out the information in this book it is becoming pretty obvious where Trumps place in history will land.The book is written in a chatty way (something I dislike) but the information I found pretty well covered most of the events as we have all seen played out over the past year or so. I had no reason to doubt much of the information presented here.I do feel that the author probably placed too much of his own “spin” on some of the facts but most readers will be able to spot this quite quickly and make up their own mind.I suspect that over the next decade or so we will see a plethora of books addressing this administration and this clown written by insiders and political pundits. This is good because as I write this review so much more has been discovered and by all signs there will be much more to come. I am glad I forked out the few dollars as I was at least (in a goulash way) entertained as I read it and I must admit rather frightened.Those who are Trumpsters will, if they even read the book, will not be pleased. For the other 65 percent plus of the voter population...well, they probably will get a kick out of it.

Michael Wolff spent months inside the Trump White House, often hanging out on the couch in a common area, talking to people, but also simply listening.It's important to note that Wolff has a reputation of being a somewhat sloppy reporter, not always reliable. It's also important, though, to note that no one mentioned in this book has denied saying what he attributes to them in this book. There are disagreements over interpretation, but not over what they said. Other reporters, with better reputations, as well as other people with access, say that while there may be inaccuracies of detail, the overall account rings true.Steve Bannon, now out of the White House, and indeed having further torched his standing with his failed support of Roy Moore's campaign for the US Senate in Alabama, was his main point of entry to the White House and apparently his major source. That's a possible source of bias in the gloss that gets put on the facts.Overall, this is an alarming picture of a White House in chaos. It's fascinating, revealing, and scary. It needs to be taken with a few grains of salt, and compared with other accounts and reporting as they become available. Nevertheless, it's an important contribution to understanding what is going on in our government and why.Recommended.I bought this book.

Forget his detractors. Wolff is telling an important story here, and there have been exactly zero credible denials of the key material facts presented herein. Yes, there is opinion and speculation here, particularly when Wolff tries to infer affect and intention from outward behavior. But there's no attempt to package opinion as fact, and it's not difficult to separate the subjective from the objective. One can argue how much you'll know about the Trump White House, in the sense of quantifiable data, after reading this astonishing book. But what is irrefutable is how much you'll *understand* this administration and its tragic, even fatal flaws. This is the proverbial "fly on the wall" chronicle, and is a must-read for anyone that wants to grasp the breadth of dysfunction and degeneracy that attend this Presidency.

This was the worst book I've ever read. I bought it in February and just now finished it.All the hype what a let down. I'm not a college graduate but I do read a lot and know big words, but please I felt I was reading a term paper. Nothing earth shattering in this book, just a author who uses big words to make us think he's intelligent. Don't waste your time just watch the news.

What can be said, that hasn't already been said about the President?Nothing in this book will surprise anyone who has been following the trials and tribulations of the 45th President of the United States, Donald J. Trump. His supporters will cry foul, and say some of it isn't true -- and some of it might not be -- but if even 10% of what is in this book is true, holy crap!Reading this book is like being forced to eat an entire 5 gallon carton of ice cream in one sitting. It is yummy and you don't want to stop. And then you do want to stop but you can't, because the book has you roped in. You should feel good, but in reality you feel awful, because of what you just did to yourself.So tread lightly, dear reader. You won't want to put the book down, but you won't be better off for reading it, either. If you don't like it, do something productive -- stop eating the ice cream and get off the couch. Make America AMERICA again!

I learned nothing from this book and was only mildly entertained with some trivial fact not important or relevant enough to be published in newspapers. I am not a Trump fan but I still doubt the author's credibility.

Very little flow to the writing - in need of some serious editing. No analysis of the information (facts) presented, although the facts themselves are detailed and comprehensive. Many times, paragraphs of information are plunked down in the midst of another narrative, or as a disjointed segue from discussion of one scenario to discussion of the next. And I would have loved some conclusions, even if they were only the author's opinion as to who bore responsibility for what (not that it would matter in the end).That said, if you're curious about what happened to American open wheel racing, there's probably no better centralized source of information about it. Incredibly in-depth, and well-documented source material.

Much is based on good fact but Mr. Whitker has so many small errors I. E. V-4 Offy which was inline and by the time frame was actually a Meyer/Drake but sill carried the nickname "Offy". There is a jump from the Chevrolet to later refer to Ilmor without making the direct connection and importance of the badged engines the team could not touch. That removed a key aspect of open wheel racing. The book is otherwise so well written, organized, and concise the mistakes pull away some credibility.

The narrative is often difficult to follow, with little explanation of major events. And there are factual errors that made me question the author's credibility. Worst of all, the author does no first-person research on the subject.Most of the principals involved in the CART/IMS split are still alive and active in racing. How difficult would it have been to have interviewed them? Why does the author seem to gloss over major events, like the defections of Penske, Gannassi and Andretti Green? Or how the IRL has failed to stop the flow of USAC drivers into NASCAR, one of the main reasons Tony George spent so much money?There's a story here that needs to be explored. But this book doesn't do it.

Great book with lots of details regarding how the best racing series in the world kept shooting itself down. Greed by car owners, suppliers and track owners have almost destroyed this beautiful sport. Recommended for any motorsport and all IndyCar fans.

It's an ok book about Indycar and pretty detailed. It didn't move me though. Didn't capture the essence of the people and their thinking

Review of "Leviathan or The Matter, Forme and Power of a Common-Wealth Ecclesiastical and Civill (Leviathan)," by Thomas Hobbes (b. 1588- d. 1679). Hobbes was known for his views on how humans could thrive in harmony while avoiding the perils and fear of societal conflict. His experience during a time of upheaval in England influenced his thoughts and beliefs. "All of his works concern the structure of society and legitimate government, and Leviathan is regarded as one of the earliest and most influential examples of social contract theory when it was written during the English Civil War (1642-1651)." Hobbes believed that peace and effective rule could only be achieved through a strong central government. Leviathan argues for a social contract for the subjects through rule by an absolute sovereign. For example on page 164 in Chapter XXX Of the Office of the Soveraign Representative: "Such as are Necessary: For the use of Lawes, (which are but Rules Authorised) is not to bind the People from all Voluntary actions; but to direct and keep them in such as motion, as not to hurt themselves by their own impetuous desires, rashnesse, or indiscretion, as Hedges are set, not to stop Travellers, but to keep them in the way. And therefore a Law that is not Needful, having not the true End of a Law, is not Good. A Law may be conceived to be Good, when it is for the benefit of the Soveraign; though it be not Necessary for the People; but it is not so. For the good of the Soveraign and People, cannot be separated. It is a weak Soveraign, that has weak subjects; and a weak People, whose Soveraign wanteth Power to rule them at his will. Unnecessary Lawes are not good Lawes; but trapps for Mony; which where the right of Soveraign Power is acknowledged, are superfluous; and where it is not acknowledged, unsufficient to defend the People." It is easy to see how Hobbes has clearly stated his case for central government and strong laws to serve as a bulwark against behavior that could lead to more societal upheaval (among others). As other reviewers have stated this is somewhat difficult reading as it was composed and remains in Old English. The syntax and organization may be different than what the reader may be used to. In the final analysis Leviathan supports the view that a person's moral and/or political obligations are dependent upon a contract or agreement among them to form the society in which they live. Five stars.

My take-away from the first half of the book was that in order to maintain civil society, all citizens must adhere without objection to all laws and regulations of the whatever type of government be in power. This would be true for Monarchies, Aristocracies or Democracies. Since the individual is beholden to the sovereign government for their survival and not falling into chaos, they have no recourse but to obey absolutely, regardless of their religious beliefs.The second half focuses on chapter/verses of the Old and New Testaments that support Hobbes' contention that the Church/clergy has no real governing power but what is granted by the country's sovereign government. His other tangents describe the Catholic church's retention of gentile/Hellenistic rituals and idols, thereby diluting a reasoned/natural approach to the Church's teaching. His derision of Aristotle seems mainly based on a superficial analysis of the metaphysical word games played by philosophical persons living idle lifestyles.

Understandably this book was written to the prince or king at the time of how to centralize power from monarchies to statehood. It is an insight to how the power structure operates and its intended goals. Follow this up with James Balko's, "Rise of the Warrior Cop: the militarization of police power" to catch a glimpse of where this philosophy has taken those who find themselves being ruled under these systems of thought carried into action. Law enforcement being an extension of state power, its is imperative to understand its basic construct!

Hobbes' thesis that the natural state of man is chaos and war is the primary justification he provides for an all encompassing authority to be placed unalterably in the hands of the Sovereign, or Leviathan. What he neglects to address is the absolutely corrupting influence such power has on the all too human Kings, Queens, and legislative bodies which hold such power over their fellow creatures.There is a saying that if men were were angels we would not need government, or if that angels administered man's government then we would not need to worry as to constraining them. But neither of these delusions can be ever be achieved by fallible man, no matter how much certain individuals may otherwise hope. You cannot legislate morality and you cannot make men charitable by forcing them to give. And much to the annoyance of Plato, no amount of education or cultural refinement can immunize man to the ever present threats of avarice, arrogance, and blind ambition. There must be checks on this power if men are to retain their hard-fought liberty and if the ultimate power of the government is to maintain its rightful abode with the People.As we in America have learned, there is a concept of government much more attuned to the particulars of human nature than the false bravado of Leviathan. It is limited government, where every individual choose for himself what he thinks is best, to the degree that he does not infringe on the natural rights of his fellows. Freedom of oppression from the government is our nation's calling card, and it has empowered and enriched man to a degree never before imagined. It seems that man's natural state, when guaranteed certain inalienable rights, was far flung indeed from an interminable warfare on his neighbors.So, Hobbes had a lot to learn but perhaps not the opportunity to do so. However, I did enjoy and learn much from him in his thorough and unbiased defense of his monarchical position using the Scriptures. He has an immense mastery of them, and cuts through some of the more confusing points of contention between the Anglican and Roman Catholic churches. He even goes so far as to address the varying degrees of heaven, the existence (or not) of an everlasting Hell, and Baptism for the Dead. It provided me with an excellent base from which to further understand the faith of the early American colonists and the churches they established in the lead-up to the American Revolution.Still, this is one of the more difficult books on this subject I've yet to slog through and so be warned that you may want to start with some lighter tomes on this subject.

About the Author

George Saunders is the author of eight books, including the story collections Pastoralia and Tenth of December, which was a finalist for the National Book Award. He has received fellowships from the Lannan Foundation, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Guggenheim Foundation. In 2006 he was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship. In 2013 he was awarded the PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in Short Fiction and was included in Time’s list of the one hundred most influential people in the world. He teaches in the creative writing program at Syracuse University.

Before you crack open George Saunders' new (first) novel, "Lincoln in the Bardo", you must empty your mind of what you expect an historical novel to be. Both the structure and the narrative are incredibly non-traditional, somewhat experimental, often disorienting, but ultimately fulfilling. Let me assure you that if you open your mind, you'll not only get used to it, you will enjoy it thoroughly.That said, I think "Lincoln in the Bardo" would work even better as a stage play, somewhat reminiscent of "Our Town", and in this sense I think an audio recording of the novel, if done well, might be the best way to experience this work.Bardo is a Tibetan word for the "in-between" or "transitional" state between lives (thank you, Wikipedia). The novel takes place in one night in a cemetery and the story is narrated by hundreds of voices: old and young, men, women, and children, white and black, salve and free. These denizens of Saunders' novel are in a place between life and death. We are told that people stay in this gray area for varying periods of time and that children usually stay there a very short time (this is where it also sounded a lot like Purgatory to me). Do these "beings" know that they are actually dead? They use words like "sick box" for coffin, and "sick-form" for body, "white stone home" for mausoleum, so they seem to be unclear as to their actual state. Through these voices Saunders creates as fascinating (and chilling) a version of the after-life as Dante Alighieri gave us. (There is a particularly interesting and notable discussion among them about free will in the latter part of the novel.)The basic plot is fictionalized history: Willie, Abraham Lincoln's young son, has died and he is now in the Bardo. Here we meet the many fascinating - and funny! characters who show Willie around, who witness the unusual sight of Lincoln cradling the body of his young son, and who endeavor to help both father and son to find peace. That's as far as I will go with the "plot" of this novel.One of my favorite things about this unique novel, was how Saunders presented conflicting "news reports". For example, when reporting on the White House gala reception the night Willie is dying, some "witnesses" said there was a full moon, some said there was no moon, some said it was green, some red, others said it was just a sliver. This serves to remind us that recorded history is just as unreliable as our current news reporting. What is the truth? Do we ever know? For the purpose of "Lincoln in the Bardo", we only need to know that the Lincolns did lose their beloved son Willie in early 1862, all else is brilliantly imagined and "reported" by Saunders.Ultimately "Lincoln in the Bardo" is a riveting exploration of death, grief, and love told in an utterly unique, almost poetic, fashion.

I was expecting a lot from this book and I'm sorry to say I was disappointed.It's clear to me that I can't fully appreciate Mr. Saunders alternative writing and since the onset I had a complicated relationship with this book (there were sections where I felt completely lost) I tried my hardest to like it, I really did.I know a few people who has swooned over this book. Not me. There is a very good chance that my aversion betrays a complete lack of understanding on my part.But in all honesty, I can't recommend it to anyone.

I almost want to break this review into two parts. One for those who know Saunders and one for those who’ll be experiencing him for the first time. What does it matter? Well, you’re about to hear and read a lot about this book, Lincoln in the Bardo, about Saunders himself (there was so much press with Tenth of December that I feel like he and I have hung out multiple times; that I know all his stories), and about his genius. Then, if you’ve never read him, and especially if you haven’t read much in the way of modern or post-modern literature, you’re going to pick up this book and put it down in about five minutes. That, dear readers, would be a grave (see what I did there?) error, a real tragedy. Why? Because Saunders’ much anticipated first novel really is as genius as the stories and interviews and blurbs are going to claim, but you have to do a little more of the work as a reader than you might be used to.Much anticipated is the phrase you’ll probably hear most. What that should tell you is that Saunders has a strong fan base. He truly does, and full disclosure here, I’ve counted myself among them for a few years now. His mastery of the short story is well known, with the use of quirky characters, odd theme parks, and surreal science fiction-y, angst inducing situations known to take you to dark, uncomfortable places but that still manage to find and nourish a spark of humanistic hope. Perhaps the most common feeling among his readers as they’ve enjoyed these works is “man, I wish this guy would write a novel!” He has, and in true Saunders fashion, he’s ensured that very little about the experience is “normal”.I’m not going to regurgitate plot here, plenty of better reviews have already done you that favor. What I do want to make sure to express is the feel of the structure and the experience, perhaps in terms of other things you’ve read and seen. The most common comparison I’ve read is Edgar Lee Masters’ “Spoon River Anthology”. The comparison is apt, there are similarities, mainly in that the dead speak to us of their pasts and especially of their mistakes. But Masters’ dead are much less playful and rarely attempt humor while Saunders’ cast of spirits deliver several laugh out loud moments as they guide readers through the tale. I thought often of Twain as I read.Another comparison that came to mind several times was Dante’s Inferno. Though instead of a proper hell, we are treated to a description of a Bardo, a purgatory where spirits have remained in between their death and their final destination. Each held up for reasons of their own personal obsessions, several of which are brilliantly and humorously described throughout the novel. Others are devastatingly sad yet delivered equally as powerfully. The reader increasingly learns about the rules and behaviors of that Bardo through these snippets of stories.This is probably a good time to talk about structure. It’s quite different and again, I’d expect no less from Saunders. Picture a Greek chorus, a paragraph or two of dialog (rarely more) with an attribution after each. It is startling at first and again, will be especially so to readers less familiar with modern and post-modern lit. And so it is this difference that will probably be the biggest complaint as the reviews begin to pile up here. My advice? Hang in there, it works and it works quite well. In fact, you’ll not only get used to it, you’ll learn to love it.More comparisons now. Lincoln, the titular and in some ways central (though in many ways not) character expresses the most powerful dialog and I often thought of Shakespeare when Lincoln spoke. These are beautiful and profound moments, by far the novel’s most powerful as he reflects on the death of his son Willie. You don’t have to be a parent to feel the impact of his dialog, but it sure didn’t hurt, and I personally haven’t read such raw, sincere and painful cogitation on death and mourning since I read Twain’s “The Death of Jean”. Readers of Paul Hardings’ Enon have also tasted of similar parental agony. In any case, it is through Lincoln’s character that the deepest waters flow.One other comparative thought, especially if you’re hearing all the publicity and thinking of picking up this novel for grandma who loves to read. It’ll also bring to mind at various times Beavis and Butthead, or maybe Hank and Bobby Hill. I don’t mean that as a negative, I really don’t. But I do understand that this is something about Saunders that people either love or hate. This is the second volume of Solzhenitsyn's epic "The Red Wheel" and, unlike "August 1914", this book focuses more on Russian society than the war. A number of the same characters return from the first work and Solzhenitsyn takes them, and the reader, to the parlors of St. Petersburg, the homes of Moscow, the trenches, the schools, the factories, the farms, and the legislative assemblies. It is an astonishing work, capturing the mood in Russia before chaos consumed her and showing the last days of a failing society.There are some flaws. Solzhenitsyn continues using the "camera eye" technique that he used in the first novel and, again, does not quite succeed with it. He is better in his use of newspaper headlines than he was in "August 1914." Where he truly fails though is in the numerous essays he includes giving the history of political parties, legislative leaders, even transcripts from the Duma debates. It is a bit too much and Solzhenitsyn is not particularly subtle in his contempt for progressives and society.Where Solzhenitsyn excels is when his characters dominate the narrative. Above all, the powers of redemption and love flow through the book despite the chaos, despite the coming Soviet horror. There are scenes that remain with the reader: a priest and a young officer talking about faith in the trenches; a colonel who comes to St. Petersburg to make a major political impact only to have it undermined by his attraction to a woman, a woman going to confession crying over her dead child, a writer on a train and his assorted notes and musings. This is an epic book to be sure but Solzhenitsyn is truly incredible when he describes the intimate moments of daily life.Be warned. While the book was translated in English a decade ago, the last two volumes have yet to be translated. Despite the book going on for 1,000 pages and a difficult read, you will want more. "The Red Wheel" is not for everyone but those who pursue it will find one of the greatest novels written in the last half of the twentieth century.

Since I've never had the energy to read Trotsky (although I've read Deutscher's biography of him), this is the most detailed account I've ever read of the Russian Revolution and the circumstances that led up to it. Solzhenitsyn's main protagonist, Colonel Vorotyntsev, is a soldier on the front in the Balkans. For most of the novel he goes on leave to Moscow and Petersburg, trying to understand why the war is being managed so badly and to find the people in charge and make some improvements.Solzhenitsyn covers almost all of European Russian society in his book, from peasants in the army and on leave, up to the muddled Nicholas II. (A friend of mine who had been for many years a member of the American Communist Party, when I mentioned Solzhenitsyn, roared, "That bastard wants to bring back the Tsar." From reading this book, I think that not likely.) Rasputin, I'm vulgarly sorry to say, never makes an appearance, except as "Our Friend" in the atrocious gossipy, malicious letters that the Tsaritsa (known to all Solzhenitsyn's Russians as "Alix") writes to her husband. Solzhenitsyn--we can guess--has no sympathy for Lenin, but he attempts to get inside that man's head and life--and shows him practically as a dupe of Helphand. The Duma comes off as a useless debating society in which it is more important to top the previous speaker than to make effective change. The Kadets--short for "Constitutional Democrats"--which might have been the stable democratic center that Nabokov admired (his father was a high-ranking Kadet) come across as wishy-washy and unable to resist being opportunists pulled by the historically powerful Left (Social Democrats, and the occasional Social Revolutionary.) The only good politician in Solzhenitsyn's estimation, as far as I can tell, is Stolypin.I hope the shorthand recounting of the book's historical matters doesn't put the reader off. Here's Russian history written by an interested Russian and an undeniably great writer, and though I liked some parts of the book better than others, I was never bored by it. Nor will you be. Obviously you should read 1914 first.

This is the second in the series and although the books are long, if you love history and want to understand the Russian revolution these are for you. I recommend starting with August 1914 which vividly describes the heroism of the Russian soldier who is so miserably led into a botched invasion of Germany. Solzhenitsyn is masterful in his bringing his characters to life from soldiers enduring the horrors of WW I on the Eastern front to the revolutionaries who are slowly pulling Russia from the frying pan into the fire. I found myself flying through both books and was saddened to see them end. Looking forward to starting the final book to see how the characters I've grown so attached to wind up when the bottom finally falls out. This is the modern War and Peace.

Unless one is a professional reviewer or critic, it is hard to summarize Solzhenitsyn's second volume (of three) in the Red Wheel. (The original Russian has five volumes, the English translation is 'abridged" into three.) Reading Solzhenitsyn is like being swept along in a tidal wave of history, personal history, dramatic story, poetry, commentary, and analysis. There is no point in fighting Solzhenitsyn's surge of energy, love, and sorrow about Russia, its peoples, its history, its glory and corruption. No words of mine can convey adequately the experience of simply reading this book.it will take you some time--it's 1,000 pages long--but I thought my time was well-spent and my horizons expanded enormously.I'm sort of on a Solzhenitsyn jag right now. I've read the Gulag Archipelago, One Day in the Life, and the first volume of this trilogy. The third volume and the Cancer War are on my to-read table. I also read a good historical compilation of Solzhenitsyn's work, The Soul and Barbed Wire, which has given me some perspective on Solzhenitsyn's life and writing.
