Very little flow to the writing - in need of some serious editing. No analysis of the information (facts) presented, although the facts themselves are detailed and comprehensive. Many times, paragraphs of information are plunked down in the midst of another narrative, or as a disjointed segue from discussion of one scenario to discussion of the next. And I would have loved some conclusions, even if they were only the author's opinion as to who bore responsibility for what (not that it would matter in the end).That said, if you're curious about what happened to American open wheel racing, there's probably no better centralized source of information about it. Incredibly in-depth, and well-documented source material.
Much is based on good fact but Mr. Whitker has so many small errors I. E. V-4 Offy which was inline and by the time frame was actually a Meyer/Drake but sill carried the nickname "Offy". There is a jump from the Chevrolet to later refer to Ilmor without making the direct connection and importance of the badged engines the team could not touch. That removed a key aspect of open wheel racing. The book is otherwise so well written, organized, and concise the mistakes pull away some credibility.
The narrative is often difficult to follow, with little explanation of major events. And there are factual errors that made me question the author's credibility. Worst of all, the author does no first-person research on the subject.Most of the principals involved in the CART/IMS split are still alive and active in racing. How difficult would it have been to have interviewed them? Why does the author seem to gloss over major events, like the defections of Penske, Gannassi and Andretti Green? Or how the IRL has failed to stop the flow of USAC drivers into NASCAR, one of the main reasons Tony George spent so much money?There's a story here that needs to be explored. But this book doesn't do it.
Great book with lots of details regarding how the best racing series in the world kept shooting itself down. Greed by car owners, suppliers and track owners have almost destroyed this beautiful sport. Recommended for any motorsport and all IndyCar fans.
It's an ok book about Indycar and pretty detailed. It didn't move me though. Didn't capture the essence of the people and their thinking

Very well researched piece of work, although some of the highlights of the era were overshadowed by the ultimate demise of an entire sport.
Best explanation, by all parties, to the renewal, expansion, feuding, destruction, and rebirth of open-wheel auto racing in the U.S.
