Perfect bread EVERY Time - THIS BOOK REALLY DELIVERSWith recipes individually tailored to all the major bread machine brands, I enthusiastically report that each recipe that I made with my new Oster bread machine did come out perfectly. My favorite recipe for toasting bread is their Maple Buttermilk Bread. According to them, my Oster bread machine requires 3 tablespoons plus one teaspoon maple syrup while a Maxim or Sanyo bread machine requires three tablespoons less one teaspoon of maple syrup. Based on my experience, i you follow their recipe, you will get the perfect loaf of bread they promise.

Has my machine, and has excellent recipes. I read through the whole book first, including the hints. I checked ingredients needed, and made notes on a couple, including the light wheat recipe. Oil was used in my loaf, in proportion to the similar recipes, and this book was found to be so good, I sent a second one as a gift to my friend who has the same bread maker. I Definitely Liked This Book.

Like most folks, everything I've made from the book has been excellent. My machine (2001 Williams-Sonoma) is included in this book. The large variety of recipes and spiral-bound format are pluses. On the down side, in their attempt to provide for a wide range of bread machines, they've made it difficult to locate recipes in the book. Each featured bread will cover several pages to provide recipes for all machines they cover. It's hard to find things doing a quick flip through the book. A tabbed format separating the various sections and a table of contents on each tab would make the book easier to use. It would also be nice if they would include some guidelines on how to adjust recipes if your machine is not listed or your bread just doesn't come out right. A good book explaining ingredients and adjustments is Better Homes and Gardens - Best Bread Machine Recipes.

This book was a mainstay for my breadmaking machine but I lost track of it in a move. I couldn't live any longer without this books recipe for brioche, so at this price, I didn't hesitate to get another copy until I found my original. This book is better than any breadmaker book I ever found because each recipe has a slightly different version for each of several classes of bread machine. The authors had found that not every machine turned out a great loaf from the same recipe -- they needed little adjustments to get the best out of the machine. Great book for any bread machine baker.

Husband loves it and is making different kinds of bread. He even contacted the author with questions and she responded dedicated quickly and was very helpful.

This is my favorite cookbook for bread machine use. The recipes are reliable, and that's in part because the book shows you how to alter recipes by machine and machine size. Our favs are the rosemary focaccia, the Stilton bread and the cherry brioche. Yum!

Have been using this book with excellent success. Teaches you to use your bread machine far beyond making just loaves of bread. LOVE this book, very under-rated, it's a goldmine of great and easy recipes. Blows away other breadmaker books.

Wow, there is a LOT of information in this book. I really think that there is something for everyone in this guide. It is well written, well laid out, and easy to find what you are looking for. I have used it to plan my herb garden. There is an index of herbs that is absolutely amazing in the detailed information and the amount of herbs it covers. I am looking forward to using some of my home grown herbs for everything from beauty (which there are a lot of recipes) to health for my whole family. I am new to this whole world of herbal remedies, but Rosemary Gladstar's book is definitely an easy way to get started. The recipes are easy to follow. Yes, there are some herbs I can't grow, but there are also many recipe alternatives that I can. I am really happy with this purchase, and it makes a great addition to my library.I actually took this book in to work today for a few of my co-workers to thumb thru. Already two people have decided to order their own copy. I think that is a good indicator. A great value for the price for sure. I have just started learning about herbalism and homeopathic remedies. This book is well written and provides very easy to follow recipes for a wide range of items from tinctures, to face cleaner, to everyday teas for optimum health. I have enjoyed reading ever page and learned a great deal about how to improve my nervous system for better living. I like that the author gives you a base recipe and encourages you to experiment to find the perfect combination for you. It is written in a positive, sharing and encouraging manner.I would warn you that in order to make all the different items you would need a HUGE pantry full of ingredients. There is a picture in the book on page 22 of the book that shows Rosemary in a room with a wall lined full of mason jars of herbs, I pretty much feel like that is what you need to be able to make all these things. I have slowly started building my stock and I think I will need an addition on my house by the time I am through. That being said I think that is probably the case for most people who get into herbalism and it will be well worth it to avoid a bunch of trips to the doctor and pharmacy bills.

Rosemary Gladstar is the most trusted herbalist in America for good reason. This book compiles all of her best recipes and information from her other books in one small, easy to use, helpful book. We've been using her elderberry syrup recipe to treat the flu for years now (most of the recipes on the web are based on her recipe). If any of our family comes down with the flu (which is pretty rare anyway), they're generally much better by the second day and completely over it by the third if we do elderberry syrup. I refer to the book often and hope to use even more of her recipes in the future.

I bought this book in hopes to learn some hearbal healing. I've been interested in herbal naturopathic medicine for quite some time, in an effort to find remedies to the many ailments my family and friends suffer from. In my family we've always gone yo the traditional western doctors, but in the past few years they have been failing us. In reality they have failed us for much longer I just didn't do anything about it. I finally got fed up ad decided I wanted to attend college and become a certified herbologist and midwife. So while I am doing my studies in those areas I decided to buy many different herbal healing books.This book was one of them.I give this book 5 stars because it is superbly written and well thought out. Each recipe is very detailed and useful. Many of the ailments mentioned and treated with natural medicine are ones my family and I suffer from, a few examples would be infertility, irregular periods, pain management, sexual impotence, headaches, common colds and flu, constipation, indigestion and so many many more. I can't even begin to name all the recipes in this book. Rosemary not only cover your basic everyday ailments but she also covers your more unusual ailments, one which my hubby had struggled with for months now and has been to embarrassed to go to a doctor about was actually mentioned in this book, I was able to help mix up an herbal remedy for him using the recipe in this book. I also have a child which like many kids has her own set of childhood issues, this book has many remedies for kids too and I can't wait to try some out and see how they work, especially the cold and flu remedies as we usually treat those with your conventional medicine, but now I really want to see how effective these remedies are. Rosemary does make sure to mention that these recipes were never intended to treat or diagnose an illness and it is no replacement for actual care from a dr. However I do believe this book will be a very effective tool in treating common issues and if your like me I think its a perfect companion to aid with conventional medicine, I've come to the conclusion in life that conventional medicine has its place and can be beneficial, but for common ailments the earth mother gas given us all we need and its best to try those medicines she offers us before we turn to the more invacive medicine offered in modern times.In all I would highly recommend this book. I will be keeping this book close at hand.One more thing Rosemary put together many herbal concoctions for a "hot date" night, there are recipes for love liquor, good life wine, men's long life elixir and energy balls, all of these recipes help the male libido as well as energize both male and females for a very romantic evening. I though that was a very nice addition to the book since as a married woman who is married to an older man I know how sometimes not everything wants to work like its supposed to either due to medications or just the days stresses, so this for me was a really wonderful addition and I honestly can say I did not expect it but it was a lovely surprise. I think the men folk will enjoy those recipes for sure who doesn't want to have a romantic evening with a loved one.So that is my review. Thank you Miss Gladstar for this lovely book I do believe it is one I will holdonto forever.

I LOVE her notes and explanations. Well put. I own more of her books. She's just well rounded. A little of humor is in it. She has a section that lists the different herbs that are ideal for women children men.

This is a great herb book for someone who doesn't know where to start and also for someone looking for more recipes/ideas. There is a lot of information in the book. I like that there are multiple recipes for similar things because I don't always have the less common herbs at home and it's nice to have another recipe to choose from. I started making my own tinctures after reading this. There are good instructions for dosing and also warnings telling you when not to take a certain herb. Highly recommend!

Even though I have not been a religious person since I was a young boy, when I did not yet learn how to question those who promote religious dogma; nevertheless, I sometimes read books with a spiritual message just for amusement.When I first read the promo on this book I thought it might be an interesting read. Unfortunately, this book did not meet my expectations. I guess I was seeking a more objective and scientific approach to the topic, but I now realize to appreciate this writer’s approach you have to already believe in God and preferably be a Christian. Fortunately, I do not fall into the category of a “believer” in the mystical; nevertheless, I did find some of the material somewhat interesting but not enlightening.This book is organized into nine subject areas and includes the following: Where do we find ourselves, the gift of uncertainty, the gift of emptiness, the gift of being thunderstruck, the gift of getting lost, the gift of temptation, the gift of disappearing, the gift of misfits and where to we go from here.I have to admit that the author is an excellent writer and the points he brings up as to where all of us find ourselves at various times in our lives is true; however, his approach is pure Christian theology which is fine for those who believe in a supreme being, but many books on Zen and other Asian philosophies can also meet the spiritual needs of those who find themselves in “the dark wood” without believing in a deity.Rating: 4 Stars. Our pastor used this for her Lenten sermons and our Lenten discussion group. The author NOT saying that bad times are God's will, but "We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28 (RSV). If we pay attention, we will find the gfits that those times bring to us. Thoughtful and thought provoking. Honest. Occasionally lost me when it was in too deep theological waters, but a worthwhile read.

How many of us have wandered through the dark woods of life...forgetting there are gifts to be used, wisdom to be gained and deep spiritual growth to be found ? Eric Elnes writes eloquently of his years of experience with his churches and of his personal soul path, sharing a language that we all need to hear, to awaken to...we are not alone in the journey. There are blessings in the struggle, in the conscious path of widening the narrow places within us and gifts that Spirit continues to surprise us with. As a Spiritual Director I highly recommend this book to all who walk the path of healing and transformation, of beauty and whole heartedness.

This was an excellent book. The exploration of the Dark Woods and it’s importance in our lives is not really a new idea to me as I write poetry mostly exploring nature’s way of teaching us within the woods whether it be Dark or light or life. But He introduces new ways of perceiving the Dark Woods in his gentle and touching way. If you seek a deeper relationship with God and a book that will walk with you in that experience, this is a wonderful book to do that. I thank God for this man speaks from his soul.

The author uses the metaphor of being in a dark wood spiritually. Rather than seeing this as a curse, he challenges us to see the dark moments of our life as the times when we can most be close to God and our truest selves. What a wonderful book!

When I was a late teenager one of books that changed my life and deepened my understanding of the spiritual life between people and God was Celebration of Discipline by Richard Foster. Gifts of the Dark Wood hits even closer to center of the true nature of the relationship between people and God. The power of intuition as a guiding force from God, the understanding of the true church of misfits, the history of the development of the easy ale house of common acceptance and detriment of the significance of the church, and the acceptance of struggle and shortcomings as gifts that God can use in us hit the nail right on the head! This book cuts right to the heart and fills the soul with hope and joy in knowing ourselves more fully and being available to the Holy Spirit.

We used this for our Lenten series at my church. I liked it so much I keep buying copies and giving them to my friends and family. Elnes gives a whole different perspective on human suffering and the reasons for it! A must read if one is going through rough times. (And all of us do at one time or another in our lives!)

I wasn't sure what to expect with this book, but I've liked Dr. Elnes work so I thought I'd get it. I was not let down! His words created a longing on my part to go deeper inside my world and find greater meaning within and from those "dark" places of life and come out on the other side, still in one piece. Highly recommended.

For believers who still have doubts., this book is a thought provoking read. It is well written and gives one many thoughts to ponder.

About the Author

Cynthia Lord is the Newbery Honor author of Rules and other middle-grade novels. Her first picture book, Hot Rod Hamster, inspired a bestselling series about a speed-loving hamster that also includes four early readers. Although there are plenty of books on the design and service histories of English capital ships, this is the only one I know of that describes in-depth the vast industrial machine that created them. Covering the era from 1889 to 1946, this book focuses on the shipyards, marine engineering works, armor plants, and armament factories which constructed 111 battleships and battlecruisers during that period. Rather than combat exploits, this book deals with money, manufacturing, and manpower. Ian Johnston (A Shipyard at War,Clydebank Battlecruisers) is rapidly becoming one of my favorite naval historians, and this is yet another excellent work by him.Granted, this is a pretty esoteric book, but it's exceptionally nicely put together, filled with superb illustrations and detailed insights. As a bit of a shipbuilding geek, I really enjoyed the large number of vintage glass-plate photographs here, along with the excellent shipyard and factory layout maps. There's a huge amount of information contained in the tables, from the price of Orion's 13.5-inch turret ammunition hoists (£48,020) to the number of men employed by the Armstrong Whitworth engine works in 1913 (1,913). There's a lot of really obscure material here that serious naval buffs will eat up. The text is generally well written but somewhat dry, but where this book really excels is in the level of detail. Highlights include the armor and gun manufacturing processes, histories of every shipyard, brief biographies of important figures, photographs of ships and big guns under construction, and insights into the procurement process. There are also excerpts from shipyard logbooks, period advertisements, and a detailed appendix of John Brown's capital ship tenders from 1905 to 1945. You could seriously spend a few hours with this book and only skim the surface."The Battleship Builders" is more sourcebook than narrative, and I can't imagine reading the Kindle version would be terribly enjoyable. There are a large number of tables and photographs which probably wouldn't translate terribly well to the E-book format. Unfortunately, the hardcover is rather small, some of the photographs are wallet-sized, and some of the diagrams are hard to study without a magnifying glass. That aside, this is a very classy reference book and a valuable contribution to the ongoing study of naval archaeology. It's not a "beach read," but it IS definitely full of "good stuff!"

Holy, moley. When it comes to this book the old 'Dragnet' TV show apocryphal line of "Just the facts, Ma'am' is an understatement. 'The Battleship Builders' is jam-packed (Britspeak: chock-a-block) with superlative photographs and facts up the yin-yang, more arcana on its topic than most of us lay readers can hope to absorb. If you're fascinated by the majesty of the great old battlewagons and would like to learn how such vessels' sophisticated mass was formed and assembled, then you must steer a beeline to the Amazon order page.

First rate story of the private ship building companies in Great Britain in the late 19th and early to mid 20th centuries that constructed most of the battleships for the Royal Navy fleet. The book includes many photographs of battleships under construction and completed. There are also many photos of the manufacturing and construction of ship components such as the heavy guns and turrets. Each separate ship builder is discussed. Also discussed in detail are the procedures for how large warships were designed and constructed in that era. The heavy industrial effort and development that existed in Great Britain a hundred years ago compared to today is simply amazing.

I would actually give this work a solid 3 1/2 stars.This is definitely not everyone's cup of tea, the myriad period tables and business documents sometimes overwhelmed the text.The conclusions were also a bit buried, but documented well. The real money was made in the armor plate and specialized gun fittings and the huge 1890-1915 building boom in British battleships was unique and unrepeatable after 1915 with barely enough capacity and skilled talent to undertake the much more modest rearming of WW2. The interwoven story of the armament and shipbuilding culture which made impossible the type of mass construction undertaken in the U.S. is also touched on.One of the technical aspects of this work is that all the photos, drawings and tables were present. While a little cumbersome to open, expand and close again it greatly added to appreciation of the story and it would behoove publishers of other works to follow this lead. See my review of Dreadnoughts which underscores this.

Ian Buxton's book is not about naval tactics and battles, admirals and seamanship. It is a well-researched story of the adaptation of Britain's technological and economic power to the design and construction of big warships in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It describes the way in which the Treasury, unable to fund a big expansion of the Navy's own dockyards to build the new designs of battleships, used contracts with the private sector to accomplish the objective. Private firms jockeyed for position to win the contracts, and brought new skills and techniques to the task. Of course, this involved politics as well. Some key technologies were retained in Admiralty control for strategic reasons. Buxton has provided us with a fascinating view of this period of British industrial history.The Battleship Builders complements the magnificent history of the British Navy written about 12 years ago by N.A.M Rodgers.

Highly detailed and meticulously researched, all the way down to and including in-depth coverage of financial matters and labor-relations. But very densely-written (which to be fair the in-depth coverage of such arcane and technical subject-matter pretty much demands) and difficult to read, especially the second half. Perhaps best absorbed in small doses.Meant for serious battleship/naval history buffs and academics, not casual history fans.

This book shows how several companies are effectively "competing on analytics" - defined as having the following four characteristics:1. Analytics supports a strategic, distinctive capability2. Approach to and management of analytics is enterprise-wide3. Senior management is committed to the use of analytics4. The company makes a significant, strategic bet on AnalyticsIn my opinion, the fourth item is really redundant, as the investment in obtaining and implementing the first criteria would satisfy the fourth. But the other three are critical. Included in both #2 and #3 is the requirement of an evidence-based decision making criteria. This is what I expect most companies will have an issue with. While the book mentions the difficulty in changing the culture and the potential for a virtual war between the "quants" and the "old guard", there are not really any good suggestions for overcoming it. The one suggestion given, proving it on a smaller scale won't work, because "proof" is not relevant for those who believe the gut is better than evidence.That said, for those who can appreciate the value of evidence, this book provides much of it. Perhaps the best is the fact how the book describes Capital One carefully targeting sub-prime risks using analytics. Since the book was published, that market in general has collapsed, but Capital one is doing fairly well. The chapters on how to build the technical and people aspects raise good points, but are far from thorough.In short, this book is a great overview, and provides many good ideas to consider, but it should not be confused as a how-to book.

Competing on Analytics will explain the different forces you have to overcome in every organization if you want to compete on analytics.The book explains the key drivers behind a successful BI-endeavor and what paths you should avoid if possible.I really liked the methodology where the author treats the subject as a stair in five steps you have to climb. From knowing nothing about analytics, to be an analytical competitor, and what actions you need to take to climb each step.Competing on Analytics is full of hands-on actions you can take and gives you plenty of material to go further.

Writing a book takes a lot of commitment and deliberation, so I while I would attest to speaking so derisively against anyone’s hard work, this book is of particularly poor and quality and insulting to the intelligence. The fact of the matter is that the authors are consultants, and in the world of consultancy, perception is everything. It looks very good on a resume to have a book published by Harvard Press, with the subject of predictive analytics, before it became a much more commonly understood phenomenon. So one has to question if the intentions of the authors were to make a book to 'educate' the masses on predictive analytics, or to further their own career. So for sake of brevity, I will restrict my review to the actual contents of and merit the book, and not speculate on the intentions, merits, or morals of the authors; This book reads like an infomercial, proselytizing it's precepts as the panacea to all business functions with no regards for anything that came before. Everything is a nail, and predictive analytics is the hammer. This book essentially takes 6 fundamental concepts, and repeats them incessantly throughout the book under the guise of new chapters. You can read the first chapter and maybe the 7th chapter, and walk away from this book just as informed as the poor souls who endeavored to consume this tome of drivel in it's entirety. This book is rife with anecdotal stories of companies who did use predictive analytics however, the authors neglected to actually show any real examples of how the analytics were formed, used, or even gathered. There are no supporting statements or logic supporting their assertions of stating how unbelievably awesome these companies are because they used predictive analytics. A prime example is the authors blatant assertion “The New England Patriots began using predictive analytics and then they won 3 out of 4 super bowls, so you can see the power of predictive analytics.” This violates the prime statistics fallacy ‘correlation is not causation’. There is no explanation of what they used to improve, or even a supporting argument that proves their statement. Their assertions can be logically reduced to, group A was successful because reasons and magic. Occasionally, to help lure the unsuspecting reader into a sense of awe of the authors mastery of statistical knowledge, the authors would throw around advanced statistical phrases like ‘linear reduction algorithms’ and have large section explaining statistics concepts. Of course, many of their advanced phrases were not explained, and the ones that were explained, were never correlated to anything said in the rest of the book. I found the book to be replete with grammatical errors that often made it difficult to understand, as well as formatting issues with tables, spliced right into a non-related paragraph, that is referenced 2 pages later to go back and look at. This low attention to common formatting was quite disappointing from ‘renown business consultants’. One exception I will take note into criticizing the authors specifically, are some of the elitist comments I found very distasteful in the book; the first was the authors calling anyone who didn’t pay their cell bill ‘deadbeats’. Yes, they actually used the word ‘deadbeat’ in a statistical analytics book. The second instance, was their apparent astonishment that a bank charged a hedge fund person an overdraft fee because they bounced a check. Because apparently, if you have 100 million in a hedge fund, but are too incompetent to manage your checking account, you shouldn’t be penalized like the rest of us mortals who weren’t lucky enough to win the genetic lottery. To show credit where credit is due, I am actually giving this book 2 stars and not just a hateful 1. 2 stars is because I did find many of the anecdotal stories to be informative, and sometimes insightful and helpful, despite lack of clarifying or supporting logic. In short, don’t read this book. Whether you care about the authors agenda or not, having spent 15 years in the industry, I can personally attest to the fact that there is nearly nothing of material value in this book. In fact, if you don’t believe me, I challenge you to read the last paragraph of the final chapter, and tell me this does not sound like a television add for the next weight loss product.

This book is great for those who wish to grasp a better understanding of why analytics are such an important tool in today's business world. Although this book is not very long, Davenport delivers some of the most dry information into a relevant, easy-to-read format for the average student, professional, or those just seeking analytical education. This book provides an in-depth look at how the growing amount of company information can be utilized as a competitive edge. Much of the content consists of analytical theory, however Davenport backs it with real-world brand examples such as Netflix, Amazon.com, Progressive, and Capital One. You will see that not all industries are equally susceptible to using these techniques to improve business processes. Davenport shows the reader that there are many companies on the verge of competing with their analytical process and some are already at that level. You will begin to understand why so many companies perform poorly even though they collect mountains of consumer data. Some of the information is a little repetitive, mainly previews of further chapters that go into to much detail. This would not be a book for those who are familiar with current business intelligence models and trends as the information is presented to a general audience. Overall if you are looking to expand you knowledge about business intelligence and don't want a "dry" book, I would recommend Competing on Analytics!
