I could have knocked someone down as I made my way toward the object of my instant affection, and when I finally stood almost directly under it, I found myself gazing up at a large ochre-colored, multi-fanged, drool-festooned, wall-eyed dragon. Be still my heart. And as I looked around the booth, I saw other humorous-but-also-edgy-looking beasts. I had entered the world of Dan Reeder, and I suppose, looking back on it now, it was inevitable that we would quickly become good friends. (I think Dan and I make each other feel normal.) Fast-forwarding to the present time, I initially thought Dan was a little crazy for writing a how-to book that reveals all his secrets on how to make such unique creatures from such un-unique materials. (Personally, I would never show anyone how to draw a cow―the udders alone took me years to master.) But he assured me he really wanted to do this. I guess it’s the teacher in him. And, in truth, I’m not one to argue that the world doesn’t need more monsters, be they made of papier and/or cloth maché, as demonstrated in Dan’s entertaining new book, or flesh and blood, as demonstrated by the one standing behind you right now. I've seen some of the author's work floating around on YouTube and the internet so I decided to look into his methods. It's true you can find much of this information online from the author himself or others who have been inspired to take up non-clay based mache for something more than the average 3rd grade project. Paper mache isn't rocket science. It's been around for a long time and been used for a lot of things. I already knew 90% of what was in this book.I'm still not unhappy with the full price.1.) The book is entertaining. I shared a few snippets over Skype with a non-artistic friend so she could laugh, too.2.) This is the in depth complete tutorials from someone who knows exactly what works and doesn't for building large, professional grade paper mache models. There are at least a half dozen different recipes out there for paste. He gives his recipe and walks the reader step by step through the exact supplies needed, how to use them, where he draws inspiration, and simple to understand photo and text instructions.Some of the supplies are moderately expensive if you want to get into the advanced techniques like drool. Considering how much art supplies on the whole cost, this is one of the more inexpensive hobbies. Compared to canvases and student grade oil paints, the price of a quart of resin is cheap.If you can't get some of the supplies, use common sense and an internet search. I don't have access to a huge heap of wire coat hangers. I went to a hardware store and bought a roll of cheap, stiff wire which is about the same gauge. If you can't get old bed sheets, check for cheap remnants of a craft or fabric store. You can also buy a few yards of bleached muslin.He doesn't go into alternate supplies but if you're an adult crafter or artist you shouldn't have any trouble.3.) A variety of different projects. This covers the dragon trophies he's probably best known for but, starts with a full body monster, marionette and a recreated plastic doll.4.) All of his expertise in one place. Digging through YouTube channels, reading debates on the best paste recipe, hearing how other people build up armatures and make sculptures from junk in the recycle bin can be rewarding. It's also time consuming. I've got the book to pick up any time I need it to reference something quickly, now.5.) I'm glad to support the artist. He's been doing this for a really long time. There are many years of experience behind the information in this book. Knowledge came from trial and error. I'm paying $3 to benefit from his experience so I don't have to start from scratch or make the same mistakes.This isn't a book showcasing photos of finished projects. You can see that for free on his forum (along with projects by other artists of all ages.) It takes a little bit of patience to read through it then return to the areas you need when you do your own projects.5 stars for instruction, humor, entertainment and a lot of content.

As a secondary art teacher of 15 years this is now my go to sculpture bible for sculpture. I had only dabbled with this material prior. Cheap household items only. Getting rave reviews for kids projects as well. Also looked into paper clay sculpting to use on top of the paper mache and using aluminum foil to sculpt smaller shapes. Use images to pay attention to nostril and eye openings. Create skull openings then flesh around it like eyeballs with eyelids over them and nostrils around nose holes. This book is invaluable as I now feel like an expert in a field I was truly a rookie. His technique is great in using bed sheets with glue and folding little squares to show things like scales. Also creating jaws by papermacheing a sub roll shape then slicing it lengthwise and in stuffing it. This giving you an upper and lower jaw. An easy and fun pictorial and well captioned read as his cat ducks in and out of his studio. Tons of pics to put before students that allows them engineer their project. A book full of building basics illustrated with a follow along as he creates a variety of differently engineered creatures. Be sure to check out YouTube with his name. That makes it great for teaching with that resource. We did trophy mounts and bobble heads to limit the amount of the animal being done. A must for anyone starting into sculpture with tips to make you an expert. Allowed my students knowledge to go their own way for their ideas.

I'm a professional crafty person, and I have a fickle Muse. I explore a wide variety of techniques in my arty life, and came across this book while looking into something else entirely.I flipped through the pages and had to have it. The author, Dan Reeder, is a middle school art teacher, and this is one kind of the things he does with his students. But he also does art shows and commission pieces and the technique of "fabric mache" can be used in a wide variety of applications.At one point he discusses why his monster sculptures have only four fingers - not only is it more arty, but seventh graders and middle fingers are evidently not a good idea. LOL!Reeder understands that some people like excrutiating detail and others just need a broad overview, so he gives you multiple options depending on whether you are skimming or taking notes, as well as lots of photos.Even if you don't wind up making anything using this technique, it's definitely worth a read. Your crafty soul will be energized by it. I work with paper mache making all kinds of simple figures but wanted to make something that would be creative and fun. It's a blast just reading Dan Reeders book and even more exciting to guild the paper mache monsters. Dan shares some great ideas and good details in his directions. Now there is an explosion of "magnigicent monstrosities" all over my home!

The details in this book are remarkable. why? Because of yhe visual aids. I used to write step by step instructions for using a computer in the 1980's. Step by step writing is hard, but I always remembered "how would you explain how to chew gum starting with the package to someone who never saw it before"? This is how this book explains paper mache. I do a lot of needlework. This looks like so much fun I just might sell all my kits and just paper mache. Probably not, but it will be nice to add this ability to my crafting skills. Simply wonderful.

This book is amazing!!!! Don't buy this if you give up easily. It takes awhile to master shaping the fingers and faces. I love creating these monsters! Not really the best project for younger kids but fun to do with your older ones! Make sure to do it in phases. Don't expect to get the monster done in one day. You can also buy Elmer's glue by the gallon and hangers right here on Amazon.

This book is very well written and I highly recommend it.

I have no idea who DidoSphere is and frankly I don't really care. All I can say is after reading the entire contents of DEBT FORGIVENESS Chapter 2 WHEN CREDITORS DECIDE TO SUE, this is a MUST READ for anyone facing a credit/debtor collector lawsuit. I am fortunate that I came across this book when I did because I am currently being sued by one of those junk debt buyers the author describes so vividly in this book.The step by step guide in Chapter 2 includes examples of what to do when you are sued by a creditor/debt collector, how to respond using correct legal terminology and how to rebut their claims using your own affirmative defenses. It even walks you through the process of defending yourself in a hearing, motions to file, what objections you can legitimately raise against the debt collector's attorney, what to do if you have to face a trial by a judge and how to file a motion to vacate a judgment if you don't prevail at trial.The incredible thing is that you won't find any of this information anywhere, at least not on the internet and certainly not from speaking to any of the attorneys that I had consulted with. Though some of them seem anxious to just take my money while another was content to tell me to settle my debt for 75 percent in the creditor's favor! Imagine that!What you will find in this guide is powerful, credible information to help you navigate through all the claptrap that the wily debt collector attorneys are known for and use the information contained in this powerful guide as a shield against their legal shenanigans.Anyone, and I mean anyone who finds themselves the victim of a creditor/debtor lawsuit needs to buy this guide book and thoroughly read and re-read it cover-to-cover. It is that important and helpful. Suffice to say, I can't believe that the information contained in this guide only cost 8.99 because it is worth ten times more than the $8.99 it cost to purchase this.

This book has so much practical information that is easy to read and understand. I think the details about what to do when creditors sue are very important to keep in mind for the future. I highly recommend this book, especially to those who, like me, are recently out of college and want to build up their credit the right way.

So far so good. I like that this translation seems less old fashioned than some others. Pevear and Volokhonsky have a mixed reputation--such is the difficulty with putting someone else's words into your own. If everyone wants to know exactly what Tolstoy or Dumas is really like, the best course would be to read them in the original language! However, I do still believe translation matters; what I have found is that in the case of these translators they tend to retain more of the author's intentions. I have been told by Russian readers that Dostoevsky could sometimes read as difficult and confusing in Russian but also more exciting; most popular English translations from the early 20th century tend to even out the dynamics of the text, making it read closer to Jane Austen's voice than you might be comfortable with. Imagine Pulp Fiction, or The Matrix, or Hitchcock (something adventurous ) remade using the most staid and edible film conventions...so much of what makes those stories special would be lost.As far as I understand, this edition retains much of the Dumasness in English and in the process is a great read! A classic like this could be butchered to death by tasteless fools and still hold onto some worth so, since the translation is clean and interesting, the material is elevated. Whatever your preference, this version certainly warrants a place in the market and quite possibly your bookshelf.

I got this for my sister after she had her second child. I kind of felt that she needed a copy with an old school binding for her son to discover on her bookshelf, or in storage, or somewhere around the house like I did as a kid.The copy lived up to the look I wanted. It had the design that would be intimidating when he was learning to read, the design that made it clearly an "adult" book...and then the title: "The Three Musketeers" which was enough, at least for me, to give it a peak inside and discover the adventure.I hope things go the same way here. Its really a must read for childhood and it has that mysterious feel that a kid would eventually be attracted to.

I had read the entire d'Artagnan saga this summer and loved it. But I read where this translation of the first book was really a good one. So I read The Three Musketeers again and was delighted with it. I was able to better appreciate the differences in the four friends and realized that I loved d'Artagnan and really liked the others because d'Artagnan loved them. I am now reading another translation of Twenty Years After. I am enjoying the historical events and the real people who participated in them, and that d'Artagnan participated in then. Dumas has a fine sense of humour and writes wonderful dialogue.

Often older translations of works like the The Three Musketeers can seem stilted to modern readers. Translator Lawrence Ellsworth believes that some of these versions "simply don't properly convey the energy and tone of Dumas's original work" (p. xix). This is not a criticism that could be applied to his translation. This book is lively, carrying the story dynamically from page to page. He manages to do this without some of the glaring anachronisms that can sometimes plague a modern translation. He also provides useful notes that help to explain some of the historic events and references.I'm not qualified to say if this is an accurate translation but is certainly an accessible, highly readable and fun one. Highly recommended.

I have seen several movie versions of this tale, but none do it true justice.It is not difficult to like the four main characters, each is unique, memorable and loyal. I appreciated that they were based upon real men, actual musketeers, who lived, loved and fought during that time in French history.Some of the events in the story are also a matter of historial fact. Dumas has woven an exciting adventure around these men and events, creating a complicated web of intrigue and political machinations.I am very surprised and also delighted to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I am vastly encouraged to read other novels by this author.FIVE very deserved stars!

There's no point in "reviewing" Dumas' The Three Musketeers - it's an obvious classic, and this is a standard translation of the work. So I'll comment on the presentation.This is the only 99 cent version of this book that I've seen for Kindle that had actual *editing* done to it! It is well laid out, and includes numerous appropriate illustrations. The only problem is that some of the formatting doesn't quite look right. The all-caps text appears tiny and some of the illustration titles use a peculiar mix of fonts that occasionally appear larger or smaller than normal text. It's a minor problem, but it can be distracting.I'm not positive, but I suspect the source text for this is the free Project Gutenberg version. However, unlike most of the cheap Kindle editions that merely copy and paste the text from Project Gutenberg, the editor who created this ebook took the time to convert ALL CAPS to italics, spent some time formatting it, and added illustrations. It also has the coolest looking cover of any Kindle edition of The Three Musketeers.The Penguin Classics edition has better editing and presentation, but it's $13. For 99 cents, this Kindle edition is well worth it. Certainly more worth it than every other 99 cent version I've sampled, and it's definitely better than the free Amazon Services edition.Recommended!

Rather than being assigned to a legion however, Narcissus (knowing what was to happen to Cato) calls the boys in to work on a special task for Rome (to "forgive" their transgressions against Rome); with Vitellius (you can read about Vitellius in Under the Eagle: A Tale of Military Adventure and Reckless Heroism with the Roman Legions). It seems there's some scrolls that predict the future of Rome and her emperors that's in the hands of some pirates and Narcissus needs a couple of centurions he can trust (or are desperate) to recover the scrolls.This is a good one. Mr. Scarrow seems to have raised his game with Macro and Cato joining the Marines and fighting pirates. While the marines aren't as good as legionnaires (just ask Macro) this is a solid story with a good mixture of political intrigue and action. As seems to be the case with Vitellius, he's in things for himself; preparing to sell Macro and Cato or even Rome to the pirates for his greater glory. Mixing this with the intrigue Narcissus breeds makes for a good read on political intrigue alone. When we add the action that Macro and Cato seem to breed (btw water doesn't slow them down) you have an excellent read before you. While neither of the boys are experienced at sea, each of them commands a ship (interesting that land officers are given command of a ship, tells you about the expected fighting style) and as expected Cato picks up naval tactics quite well while Macro leads by example. The pirates are a nice vehicle for the story, enabling Mr. Scarrow to set his story differently than he has in the past. This difference refreshes the storyline, showing us that Macro and Cato have grown off of each other and become better officers because the two recognize that they're better together. For me this could be the best in the series to date. I'm very impressed with Mr. Scarrow's take on Roman naval actions agrees with my readings and when you merge that with Macro and Cato's normal abilities in combat, it makes for a great read. Call this one 5 stars.

This Eagles of the Empire series by Simon Scarrow is the best series I've ever read. Every book has been hard to put down. The main characters of Macro and Cato really grow on you and it's exciting to follow them through their adventures. You learn a lot about Rome and the Roman Empire as well as it's military campaigns, strategies and weapons. Mr. Scarrow has done serious research in every region in which his stories are set so there's lots of historical accuracy. He will admit when he has taken literary license to "fill in the blanks" where there's missing information. I love this series!

These six books were a fascinating look a the progress on twp Legionnaires through the battles in Gaul and the conquest of Britain. Ans the characters of Macro and Cato were a great fit, the tough old Centurion and the newcomer who becomes his friend while also rising quickly in the ranks due to his bravery and intelligence. The reader really enjoys the comradeship and lively ,witty exchanges between the two. And a little romance for them both. A very good series that once i started I could not put down. Had to get the next one as soon as I finished one. Great story telling from the author and also a look a the leaders and their decision making.Added to the story are great narratives on the battle that really grab your attention and give you a feel for the close encounters in that type of battle with massed formations,phalanx,shield walls,and the difference between a well oiled machine,the Romans, versus the brave but unorganized Gauls and Britons. Sorry to see the series end!!

His characters amble thru a world of Roman and tribal mores and folkways well portrayed in his stories. His plot threads and 1st century intrigues are very well done. The odors the flavor the squalor of urban antiquity are well crafted and woven into the tapestry of the stories. Good characters in good historical backdrop doing good adventure. This is a good series.

First of all, I'm not a scholar nor an intellectual. I am proud to consider myself as simply a reader. Since I was first captivated by 'David and the Phoenix' in primary school I have loved the magic and mystery so easily found in books. Pulitzer Prize-winning works on the civil war, best sellers, fiction and non-fiction, I continue to revel in nearly all genres. In historical fiction, I consider Simon Scarrow one of my top ten favorites.In this sixth book of the Cato and Macro series, the characters continue to blossom and the story line grabs you and won't let go. To readers who enjoy this time of history I strongly recommend 'The Eagle's Prophecy' as well as the entire series. You will enjoy all of them. I believe that reading them in order is the best but if you find yourself reading your first Cato and Macro out of order, I would not be surprised if your next choice is book number one in the series. Enjoy them, they are worth your time.

I have read all of Mr. Scarrow's Roman Series. Rather than talk about all 10 books individually I decided to write one all encompassing review. Mr. Scarrow is an excellent writer who brings Rome to life. His writing is lively and his works are well crafted. His grasp of Ancient Rome is superb and his books could well be used as supplementary reading in history courses around the world. But, first and foremost he is an exciting writer, his books are real page turners and they are hard to put down.
