I'm a sucker for ancient history with an especial soft spot for the Roman Legions of the late republic and the early empire. Scarrow gives us good characters who have developed over time and reasonably believable opponents. The resolution of the major conflict seems contrived given what I know of Roman disciplinary practice, but who knows it could have happened.
Macro and Cato are back at it, having survived the Celts in Briton they've returned to Rome for reassignment. Rather than being assigned to a legion however, Narcissus (knowing what was to happen to Cato) calls the boys in to work on a special task for Rome (to "forgive" their transgressions against Rome); with Vitellius (you can read about Vitellius in Under the Eagle: A Tale of Military Adventure and Reckless Heroism with the Roman Legions). It seems there's some scrolls that predict the future of Rome and her emperors that's in the hands of some pirates and Narcissus needs a couple of centurions he can trust (or are desperate) to recover the scrolls.This is a good one. Mr. Scarrow seems to have raised his game with Macro and Cato joining the Marines and fighting pirates. While the marines aren't as good as legionnaires (just ask Macro) this is a solid story with a good mixture of political intrigue and action. As seems to be the case with Vitellius, he's in things for himself; preparing to sell Macro and Cato or even Rome to the pirates for his greater glory. Mixing this with the intrigue Narcissus breeds makes for a good read on political intrigue alone. When we add the action that Macro and Cato seem to breed (btw water doesn't slow them down) you have an excellent read before you. While neither of the boys are experienced at sea, each of them commands a ship (interesting that land officers are given command of a ship, tells you about the expected fighting style) and as expected Cato picks up naval tactics quite well while Macro leads by example. The pirates are a nice vehicle for the story, enabling Mr. Scarrow to set his story differently than he has in the past. This difference refreshes the storyline, showing us that Macro and Cato have grown off of each other and become better officers because the two recognize that they're better together. For me this could be the best in the series to date. I'm very impressed with Mr. Scarrow's take on Roman naval actions agrees with my readings and when you merge that with Macro and Cato's normal abilities in combat, it makes for a great read. Call this one 5 stars.
This Eagles of the Empire series by Simon Scarrow is the best series I've ever read. Every book has been hard to put down. The main characters of Macro and Cato really grow on you and it's exciting to follow them through their adventures. You learn a lot about Rome and the Roman Empire as well as it's military campaigns, strategies and weapons. Mr. Scarrow has done serious research in every region in which his stories are set so there's lots of historical accuracy. He will admit when he has taken literary license to "fill in the blanks" where there's missing information. I love this series!
These six books were a fascinating look a the progress on twp Legionnaires through the battles in Gaul and the conquest of Britain. Ans the characters of Macro and Cato were a great fit, the tough old Centurion and the newcomer who becomes his friend while also rising quickly in the ranks due to his bravery and intelligence. The reader really enjoys the comradeship and lively ,witty exchanges between the two. And a little romance for them both. A very good series that once i started I could not put down. Had to get the next one as soon as I finished one. Great story telling from the author and also a look a the leaders and their decision making.Added to the story are great narratives on the battle that really grab your attention and give you a feel for the close encounters in that type of battle with massed formations,phalanx,shield walls,and the difference between a well oiled machine,the Romans, versus the brave but unorganized Gauls and Britons. Sorry to see the series end!!
His characters amble thru a world of Roman and tribal mores and folkways well portrayed in his stories. His plot threads and 1st century intrigues are very well done. The odors the flavor the squalor of urban antiquity are well crafted and woven into the tapestry of the stories. Good characters in good historical backdrop doing good adventure. This is a good series.
First of all, I'm not a scholar nor an intellectual. I am proud to consider myself as simply a reader. Since I was first captivated by 'David and the Phoenix' in primary school I have loved the magic and mystery so easily found in books. Pulitzer Prize-winning works on the civil war, best sellers, fiction and non-fiction, I continue to revel in nearly all genres. In historical fiction, I consider Simon Scarrow one of my top ten favorites.In this sixth book of the Cato and Macro series, the characters continue to blossom and the story line grabs you and won't let go. To readers who enjoy this time of history I strongly recommend 'The Eagle's Prophecy' as well as the entire series. You will enjoy all of them. I believe that reading them in order is the best but if you find yourself reading your first Cato and Macro out of order, I would not be surprised if your next choice is book number one in the series. Enjoy them, they are worth your time.
I have read all of Mr. Scarrow's Roman Series. Rather than talk about all 10 books individually I decided to write one all encompassing review. Mr. Scarrow is an excellent writer who brings Rome to life. His writing is lively and his works are well crafted. His grasp of Ancient Rome is superb and his books could well be used as supplementary reading in history courses around the world. But, first and foremost he is an exciting writer, his books are real page turners and they are hard to put down.
