This was an excellent read. I bought this book because I am studying for my CAADC and felt this book would a great addition to my resources. I was correct. It really broke down all of the disorders coupled with any drug you can think of. I love the case studies and how you were able to see the level of care and treatment needed per client for each disorder coupled with a substance issue. The book was not a heavy read and is loaded with excellent resources for further insight.

This was used as a textbook for a Dual Diagnosis class and will continue to be a go-to resource for me. I'd highly recommend it not only to those in the field but those who are interested in the topic as it's not a difficult read.

I bought this as a required graduate textbook. However, I have used it across classes as a reference. This book is very versatile in determining evidence-based treatment options for various disorders in a co-occurring SUD or singular context. It also provides a good primer for writing formal, co-occurring treatment plans for each disorder discussed. So far in my education this text has proven to be the one I use most frequently next to the DSM-V. The material is concise, user-friendly, and easy to digest. Thank you Charles Akins for your time and effort in this material and I have benefitted greatly as a clinician from this book alone.

This book is an easy read with a lot of important, valuable information. The author does a phenomenal job at helping readers understand the different disorders. I highly recommend this for students, professionals, people living with disorders, and loved ones. This book helped me understand my family members’ disorder and ways that I can be more supportive.

I recommend this book to clinicians. I am a counselor and also train others in the field. Clinicians will love the simplicity of a beautifully written treatment plan with examples of "spot on" goals and objectives. Believe me, you will be borrowing these treatment gems!!! This is a fabulous, comprehensive co-occurring guide!!!

It seems like he is using these last few books not to please the Artemis fans but more to stand on a soap box about saving the environment, and to express just how repugnant he finds the average human being on this polluted earth. Those who have been faithfully following this series will know that this is book six of the adventures of the teenaged criminal mastermind, Artemis Fowl II.Picking up at Fowl Manor, we learn that three years have passed while Artemis was otherwise occupied, and that he now has two brothers, twins named Beckett and Myles. This book goes in a different direction to the previous plot, making no mention of some of the characters introduced in The Lost Colony. There are references to certain events, but other than the main characters, most of the story is new material.As the title implies, an older and more mature Artemis Fowl enlists the help of his friend Captain Holly Short, dwarf Mulch Diggums and the imp warlock No.1 to journey to the past to correct a mistake he made earlier in his eventful life. His mother has contracted a rare disease that can only be cured by an extract from the brain of an extinct lemur, and ironically, the extinction was hastened by young Fowl himself.The time trip gets very complicated when Artemis matches wits with his younger self, and rescuing the lemur from Dr. Damon Kronski, leader of the Extinctionists cult, proves to be much easier planned than achieved. To make it more complicated, there's now a fledgling romantic situation in play, and the return of an enemy from the past who also wants possession of the lemur.Artemis isn't as devious and diabolical as in earlier books, but to his credit, the kid is growing up and has other things on his mind. This book is action-packed with the usual gadgetry and humor, but as is the case with time paradoxes, it is sometimes hard to keep things straight. The plot also has several twists, obviously getting even twistier in the final chapters. The story ends with an obvious hint for another book.And "What about the Kraken?" you may ask. The Time Paradox starts off when Artemis returning home 3 years later. He now has 2 little brothers and he's growing up. This book is action packed the entire way, there's no rest at all in this book. It also seems to have the beginnings of a romance between Artemis and Holly. Artemis isn't the "bad guy" of the previous books. The plot of this book is Artemis must go back in time to save a Lemur and he has to face his younger self. It's very complicated at times and hard to follow. This book also is a bit on the disturbing side when it comes to the Extincionists. These guys are messed up. The budding romance between Holly and Artemis is a bit odd considering she's an adult and he's a teen. I'm curious how this will work out and be moraly right at the same time (although they are 2 different species....hmmm). An reintroduction of a old enemy is here too. The ending of this book leaves it open for another afterwards and frankly if this is the end, it's upsetting.All in all, an excellent book in the Artemis Fowl series, ideal for kids and adults.

(SPOILERS)Another fast-paced Artemis book that was a lot of fun to read in a weekend. Like others who wrote in, I missed Butler and Minerva but didn't find her absence such a mystery at this point. They are, after all, both teenagers and should develop other relationships along what will hopefully be an on-again-off-again relationship throughout future storylines. Instead, I found the Holly & Artemis momentary romance to be endearing and humorous. I worry, though, about Artemis' developing character. Others commented on his not quite being his mastermind self and until the end of the book that is certainly true. I don't think any reader wants Artemis to be "nice". He walks a line that makes him interesting and dangerous and because his inner core really wants to do the right thing, it makes him likable despite himself. Some of that got lost in this edition. Overall, though, it's just another really entertaining and enjoyable sequel that makes me want to read what's next!

My 11-yo son and I both really enjoyed the Artemis Fowl series, but this book was a major letdown. Time travel is difficult to get right, and Colfer missed the mark. The character development in the book is lame, and the story has more holes than a piece of Swiss cheese.My son didn't make it through the book, and I will certainly not read it a second time. Too bad, I really like Artemis, Holly, Foaly, Mulch and the Butlers, and was hoping to hang out with them for a few more books.

In Artemis Fowl: The Time Paradox, Eoin Colfer continues the adventures started in the original Artemis Fowl. This time Artemis must return to the past to stop himself from destroying the last lemur that held the key to curing his mother.When Artemis was 10, he sold this lemur to a group of extinctionists. Now the only thing that will cure his mother is in the brain of that lemur.In an action packed volume, Eoin Colfer pumps up the intensity in the series. The plot moves at a perfect pace and if you understand paradox you can figure out that it sets up more than book six.I highly recommend this book for anyone who has read and enjoyed the other titles in the series.

This book is pretty good and won't likely dissapoint Artemis Fowl fans. It has the usual entertaining elements of the other stories in the series. But for fans of Nathanial Parker, who identified heavily with the characters in part created by his superb narrating abilities, it will be an adjustment. It's not that Enn Reitell is not a great story teller, he really did a servicable job. BUT, I never could get used to the incongruity of the new voices of Butler or Foley in particular. He did a great Mulch. So all in all, not our favorite in the series but well worth the read or listen. I hope Nathanial Parker returns for future Fowl books.

This was a great book, and the only complaint I have about it is that it restricted itself mainly to what happened on the American continent and only on the United States. The research was very thorough. The book covered what happened when people first started arriving in America to both them and the Native American Indians. I don't think this was ever mentioned in the history books that I read in school...that basically we won the nation due to the fact we made Native Americans very sick first...and decimated their population. It covers all of the major American wars. I especially didn't know as much concerning the French and Indian Wars, or the Revolutionary War and how disease impacted the outcomes of these wars. I knew more about what happened during the Civil War because we lived very near a home used in the Civil War in Pennsylvania, and I often went to their Civil War days. They always had a medical kits and the embalmers, instruments that were used back then. It's actually kind of amazing that so many men did survive the Civil Wars with horrendous injuries...but it is important to remember that that disease did more killing during this war, than in the future ones.The book went into WWI and WWII, and Korea and Vietnam. I was a bit disappointed in the later wars...I think more could have been supplied about the later wars. In fact, I didn't see very much information about the Hantavirus which was a problem over in Korea, and is a current problem in the four corners area of the US. Even though disease has quit being the primary source of death during the wars, it is important to know about the problems with the current vaccines our military are required to take, and exposure to garbage smoke when they have large burns in places like Iraqu and Afghanistan, because these vaccines and exposures are causing so many autoimmune system problems. And definitely more could have been shared about Agent Orange in Vietnam.This is a good first book in the topic, and I definitely would be interested in another book from Petriello on perhaps European wars.

A summary of the review on StrategyPage.Com'American military historian Petriello looks at the role of disease in American military history. He opens by reminding us that evidence from both the archaeological record and even Native American oral tradition indicates the presence of epidemic diseases in the Americas before the Columbian exchange. He goes on to discuss how “Old World” diseases played an important, if unintended role, in the European conquest of the Americas, and then focuses increasingly on the influence of disease on English settlement, the beginnings of the United States, and its wars from the Patriot victory in the Revolution, won in part due to the introduction of inoculation, through to the present operations in the Middle East. Petriello at time makes some interesting observations by noting, for example, instances in which a particular commander was laid low at a critical moment, or not taken ill despite epidemic conditions, which arguably influenced the course of events in ways we can but speculate about. Putting 400 years of history in under 300 pages is a daunting task. Doing a readable history on this subject is an equally daunting task. The good news is the author is able to accomplish both, producing an informative, enjoyable and readable history. For most of history, disease was a greater danger than combat for soldiers. Generals try to plan their campaigns around fever seasons as doctors can do little more than watch men die.This is both a history of how disease shaped America’s wars and how we worked to conquer disease. This is a balanced historical account without lurid accusations or speculations. The author is always careful to point out the reasonable causes and impacts. The decimation of Native Americans is a result of two very different cultures meeting, not deliberate action. However, this did make settlement of the “New World” easier or even possible.The majority of the text, about 80%, covers through World War I. The balance looks at World War II and modern day problems. The book is full of historical tidbits that are interesting and thought provoking. Many problems result from tainted food, bad water or poor sanitation. An inaugural dinner party that almost killed the President, German agents trying to kill horses in 1916 for example.This is a serious history with endnotes, bibliography and a full index.Illustrations abound from woodcuts to photographs.This well-made handsome book is a pleasure to hold and to read.

Amazing book. It kept me reading for hours. I recommend for anyone who enjoys history.

*****As someone who lives with chronic pain, I found this book to be uplifting and encouraging, giving me hope for the first time in a long time. I have tried and tried to exercise but always injure myself and end up with an additional problem contributing to my pain syndrome. After so many years of doing this I basically had given up. Now I have what I believe is a way to feel better. It will take hard work and time, and so I will post updates here. With the exercises in this book, you start where you can--wherever that is--and work up from there. The author gives many examples of people with issues like mine who start at a low level and after a matter of persistence and patience end up with less pain and greater mobility. I am encouraged.The first part of the book discusses chronic pain--what it is and what causes it. The author reviews the new research about fascia and how doing simple "esssentric" (muscle lengthening and strengthening) exercises is the best way to renew and rebalance our bodies and get out of chronic pain. Today 20% of all people in the U.S. are suffering with chronic pain! The author explains scientific concepts in such a simple, clear way. She describes the "pain loop" and how to break it. She explains the new scientific discoveries of how fitness industry standards can cause injury and how all concentric exercise (the exercise that most exercise Americans do that shortens and strengthens our muscles) needs to be balanced with eccentric exercise to avoid injury and pain.The author explains much about the fascia--our connective tissues--and how new science informs how we must care of it if we want to age well. Throughout the book there are examples of people who struggle with chronic pain and about how through the "Essentrics" technique (developed by the author) they conquered their pain syndromes.The author has been featured many times on PBS and is also the author of a previous book, "Aging Backwards". She has DVDs out demonstrating the techniques, as well as a channel (for pay) that live streams all of her workouts. However, anyone could figure out how to do the exercises from the book, as they are illustrated and described in detail, along with correct and incorrect postures for the exercises.The first 60 or so pages of the book is explanation of the theory behind the Essentrics technique and the rest is specific workouts for: warmup, foot and ankle, knee, hip, back, upper back and shoulder, connective tissue, immune system, arthritis, and stress. Most of the workouts (if not all) use all of the body's 650 muscles and 384 joints. And you might need a few commonly found props like a chair or a blanket, but no special equipment at all.Highly recommended.*****

OMG--this very gentle 30 minute routine got rid of my pain. The instructor talks about what causes our pain while you go through the routine and shes right. We need to be more gentle with our bodies and she's had her share of pain. The dvd is kinda pricey but worth every penny.

This book describes in detail the pain reducing aspects of Classical Stretch/Essentrics. The second part of the book has exercises for prevention/relief divided into sections (ex. back, feet/calves, etc). Very good for both long time followers of the program and those new to it.

Forever Painless may in fact be the resource I’ve been looking for. Up until this point I haven’t been able to find any form of exercise that my body could tolerate consistently. This book gives me hope!In Part One, Esmonde-White explains the ins and outs of chronic pain and why her approach makes sense. Though she is clearly very knowledgeable on this subject, her writing style makes the information accessible – and really interesting – even for the most medically novice.The second part of the book is divided into exercises, including a basic warm-up and workouts that target certain areas or causes of pain. The exercises are described with easy-to-follow instructions as well as pictures for those of us that need both in order to figure out what the heck we’re supposed to be doing. (Coordinated I am not) I zeroed in on the Connective Tissue workout and the Immune System workout… but what really impacted me was the question she asks and answers – How can I stretch while I’m in pain? This is something I have asked more than one of my doctors, including my rheumatologist and my neurologist, without getting any helpful answers. I practically have that little section of the book memorized now!There are many great things about Forever Painless, especially for those of us who have been seeking a resource like this for a while. The information is engaging and easy to understand, and the exercises are doable and well-described. Perhaps the best thing about Forever Painless though is that Miranda Esmonde-White leaves the reader – the person who is weary of pain – with the hope that there IS hope. That we don’t have to simply “manage” our pain, but that complete relief is entirely possible. (At the same time, she is also realistic with some conditions for which a cure from pain may not be achieved.) I am looking forward to incorporating her workouts into my daily routine and becoming less sedentary.(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book)

Good book but difficult to read in the Kindle format. It is not easy to see the pictorial descriptions of the exercises in such a small black and white format. I might try the book from the library to see if I can follow it better.

Don't waste your $$ on this book. While informative, each chapter just repeats itself using different verbiage. You'll get better info from her exercise DVD's and/or workout program on PBS.

I am a fan of the Classical Stretch/Essentrics workouts, so I bought this book as a quick reference. I would recommend buying the Classical Stretch DVDs, especially the TV series versions. My favorite is Season 11. I have gotten much pain relief from doing the exercises and recommend Miranda Esmonde-White's stretches for anyone who wants to feel better and look better. It has kept me from having any recurrences with Sciatica and has gotten rid of my severe foot pain. I can walk barefoot on hard floors without pain. In the past, I had to wear shoes indoors because my feet were so painful. Now, that's a thing of the past.

Not at all what I expected. I really thought they would be dehydrated MEALS in a bag. Most of them require you add staples from your refrigerator or cupboard when preparing. i.e. fresh meat, milk, eggs, cream cheese, cheese, canned tuna or chicken, etc.I wanted meals that you could prepare, adding water and heat. That's it. A complete meal or complete dish.There were a couple of soups that fit that category, and a few breakfasts (flavored instant oats), but not a lot. Would be nice if she provided options for freeze dried cheese and meat, eggs, etc.Very disappointed.

When this book arrived I went through it, reading the recipes. I noticed that several of them were missing an important ingredient. Water! It was mentioned in the instructions but wasn't listed in the ingredient list. I messaged the author through her Facebook page and emailed her at the email address on her website. When I hadn't received a response after 2 weeks I emailed the editor. She emailed me the next day and said she would contact the author and have her contact me. So while I was waiting I decided to test a few of the recipes. That is when I questioned whether the recipes had even been tested. Southwest Rice and Veggies calls for rice and dry beans cooked in a crockpot. When the rice was cooked the beans were still rock hard. By the time the beans were cooked the rice was complete mush. Chicken and Stuffing Casserole results in disintigrated bread cubes and uncooked bell peppers. All in all, a complete waste of time and money. And after 3 weeks, still no contact from the author!

Easy recipes, with complex flavors! Especially love the caramelized onion powder! Perfect companion to “The Ultimate Dehydrator Cookbook”! I dehydrate everything I grow, from apples and beets to watermelon and zucchini, and have made many of these recipes! All are delicious, nutritious, lo cal, no fat. Even if you only use fresh ingredients, this would be a great addition to your cookbook library!

This book was worth the price just for the recipes for Vinegar Powder and Soy Sauce Powder! It is filled with common sense recipes that will help anyone who wants to make long term storage meals. I have already filled more than 60 Mylar bags with meals!

If you are new to dehydrating- this woman has all the books needed to make you a pro. I received them for Christmas and now feel the need to thank her personally for providing such insight on dehydrating foods. Would recommend!!

Perfect companion to her first book. Probably won't make everything in the book but already have a long list of things to try. Did not disappoint. Something for everyone who likes to dehydrate.

Love this book. I'm not new to dehydrating/food storage but there are many creative NEW recipes here to follow - and techniques to use on my own!
