I really tried to finish this. It seemed like a good mystery at first. But at 49%, I had to quit..too much profanity, too much perversion, BDSM,F-Bombs. I even tried skimming pages, but still couldn't get beyond those; too much. I think Titus is a good guy and I wanted to see how it played out, but I had to quit. I won't be reading any more of this series and not this author if all his books have this kind of content.
John Patton's Miami Burn is one part Philip Marlowe, one part Shane Skully. Titus is a tough talking pit bull with a no-nonsense attitude and his own idea of justice, which lands him in trouble when a rich woman in a limo comes looking for help. It's a non-stop tour-de-force that could easily be the start of a great new series from a writer with a distinct voice and a natural talent for story telling.Miami Burn has the sparse style and clever dialogue you expect from detective noir, along with a unabashed look at Miami. John Patton's world is populated by tough guys, lowlifes, and smooth talking dames. But these aren't the card board cut outs you find in most fiction. These are real people that add depth to the story. You feel like you know some of these characters. The tale wastes no time throwing you right into the action, and there's plenty of that. The author obviously knows his stuff. There is also an eye for detail that brings the story to life and a critical look at human nature told through the sarcastic eyes of the main character, a damaged hero with a score to settle. This is a fun, fast read, sure to please fans of detective noir! Can't wait for the next book in the series. Sign me up! Titus is the kind of hard knuckled loser you love to root for!
Intriguing stand-alone that is easy to follow and difficult to put down. Some violence, no drag-you-down drama.The story starts off with a plug and play, cliche scene. However it quickly develops into an interesting and entertaining storyline. Surprise twists at the end.Believable characters with distinct personalities and emotional baggage.Thought-provoking, realistic dialogue.'Silly popularity contests, just like high school. And for what? We all end up in the same place. I thank my lucky stars that I was born blessed with the apparently rare ability to be happy without any approval from another human being.''Then I remembered the other reason I hate these places. They destroy your senses while placing you in a crowded uncontrollable environment. Too many variables. Too many people stuffed into too small a space, senses violently assaulted by music and strobe lights. Not to mention everyone’s ingesting copious amounts of reality-bending substances that inhibit thinking skills.'No desire to re-read this story. I am interested in other works by this author.
This was a very good, captivating story. I liked the way it kept In forward motion. It Is Inventive and all the roads weave together well. I like the characters and their developments. This author could make it to a greater audience and billing with better editing. Learning to use last tense when appropriate would be helpful but a better editor could take care of that.
I absolutely loved this book! I dreaded when I had to put it down to get work done and am going through "withdrawals" now that I have finished it.I had thought that I would never find another easy, fast reading, detective/suspense series similar to the Spencer Series since Robert Parker's untimely passing. John Patten has accomplished that and more! He has obviously done an amazing amount of research into the neighborhoods of South Florida as well as the seedy underbelly of personalities that you might not want to run into when you're alone.Thank you! Cannot wait for the next book!!
I enjoyed reading this new author. I liked his style. However this was a dark book for me, dealing with some difficult subject matters, and lifestyles that are not something I can understand let alone appreciate. I still would give this author another try.
To write an entertaining and exciting Action Thriller, you have to create a great action hero or anti-hero. You have to create depth in the character, personality and likability. Then you write an interesting story line, with memorable characters. This author John D. Patten has done all of this in my opinion and created an entertaining series, beginning with Miami Burn. Titus, an ex-cop looking for closure in the death of the love of his life is in Miami to kill the man responsible in his mind. He gets sidetracked taking a job to find a missing young woman, and the story starts off like a rocket from Cape Canaveral and doesn't slow down as is winds through many twists and turns. Surprises galore. I was fascinated by this story and character. Don't miss it!!!!!
Ex-policeman gets involved in solving a crime after spending ten months as an inmate of a medium security jail.His interest was piqued when a high-society woman asked him to find her daughter, while shielding her husband who was running for Senate. His ability to live humbly, even after being paid double the high fee he charged after first turning down the case, then reconsidering was interesting. At the same time he tells of his heroic efforts to trace the daughter, even after her slimy politicial father paid him a fortune to back off. Then he figures out a big deception and follows a hunch while being followed, shot at, despised, ordered to get out, beaten up. Nothing stops him. He solves the case within a week, returns the balance of the money to a deserving party, leaving himself broke, while moving on to kill the killer of the love of his life. He is larger than life but its a highly enjoyable story.
