To have known the calm thoughtful precise Nigel Calder through his life saving mechanical guidebooks makes reading this story of one sailing disaster after another difficult to reconcile. However it is a most valuable read for anyone thinking of chucking it all and going sailing. I was a neophyte sailor about the same time as Calder got his family aboard Nada but I went a different route not trusting my building skills. I bought a well found production boat of known quality and went coastal cruising and suffered much less but was filled with the same feelings of anxiety he expresses so well. Calder took his pregnant wife and small child to the Caribbean only to discover they are all prone to seasickness, his wife hates sailing and his home built boat is overly tender. It is a tale well told with lots of personal history and anecdote, candid, funny and appalling by turns (much too much defecating and urinating inappropriately by the children for me) but so honest and filled with the real emotions of going sailing it brought back my memories of feeling overwhelmed and concerned at dropping it all to go and be a sailing Bohemian. Besides I too loved sailing the Exumas and Calder bravely tackles the place I wanted to go and never had the nerve: Haiti. Fascinating easy to read and if you love to sail a must read.
I'm a sailor, I have a sailboat and sail San Diego Bay, but so many times i'm afraid to go out there, because I might make mistakes, screw up, and things might go bad. Well in this book, Nigel Caulder, one of the world's foremost experts on boat mechanics, diesel engines, etc....tells us all the dumb things HE did, and all the crazy things that went wrong on his first big adventure. The book was entertaining, educational and well written, and also offers somewhat of a history lesson of the Caribbean. Loved this book.Rick D'Amico
I enjoyed this book very much. Calder gives an honest report of what it's like to face the joys and challenges on the cruising life. Although it reflects back on his sailing decades ago not much has changed except navigational tools, and crowds, so this is all still relevant today. I like the inclusion of some history of islands where he lands and explores. I learned enough to make me want to know a lot more.
This is an excellent read for young dreamers who want to sail the world. Learn what not to do by following their first cruise adventures and tribulations.

Shakedown Cruise is a great read! This book fuses all of Nigel's other books, great spots to sail, useful tips for getting in an out of harbors, anchoring and charts, as well as historical briefs on each island and port. I also found his honesty about the difficulties of raising children on a boat on a serious budget to be deeply inspiring. It is in many ways a book for couples who want an honest opinion about the joys and tribulations of raising a family at sea. For me personally, as Nigel's eldest daughter, I found my memories justified as I am seasick on almost every page!!!! As the lucky offspring of this adventure, I encourage everyone to read this book and take your kids out to sea!!!
I have to admit the title threw me. What I originally thought was it was a tourist type luxury liner cruise designed to nickel & dime the average customer. Now I realize a shakedown cruise is intended to prepare a new vessel or aircraft for regular service by accustoming the crew to its features and peculiarities. breaking in and adjusting machinery, etc. Turns out the author of this 1987 narrative would later become one of America's leading yachting writers and that this 1987 shakedown cruise would prove instrumental in making Calder the yachtsman he is today.Although I picked by mistaken the title, I'm one that believes in serendipity. As I started reading I was reminded of my junior year in high school; where I spent the summer in Montreal working as a stevedore. The young men's culture; instead of talking about getting their first car, were excitedly conversing about getting their first boat! Nigel Calder would fit right in. So this hooked me in. I was back into that culture with a master yachtsman and writer/In the dark we forgot to unplug the shore power a cable: we rip it in half and find the torn end trailing overboard in the morning, an apt symbol of the rough cutting of our umbilical cord since we are leaving much unfinished business behind.Thus begins the narrative as the author cuts the cord with the land world & embarks with his young wife, three months pregnant, in 1987 and their one-year old daughter. Shakedown Cruise captures these months as Terrie became increasingly large, giving birth in late summer. They continued sailing through the West Indies in the relatively, still unspoiled Caribbean until 1988. By the time their new born son turned one; Shakedown ends.The narrative follows their cruise from New Orleans across the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean basin to Venezuela and back. They were both often seasick and Niguel was continually fixing the boat, as what could go wrong, did go wrong. The book is peppered with sections that tell the reader the proper way fix problems or address them. For instance: Running A Ground And Kegging Off; Gulf of Mexico Cold Fronts; Heaving To; Anchoring Routines; Navigating In Coral; A Bahamian Moor; and more. There are also color pictures, black & white photos, diagrams, and maps.This is an adventure story and colorful travelogue in one.Well worth reading; especially for those who have sailing in their blood and/or culture.
