It was a book about many things. There is the friendship between two young women writers. It dealt with the pain of a cancer survivor who lost part of her jaw in the process of saving her, and the many painful surgeries she endured to make her beautiful so that a man would love her. Addiction to pain killers is a way of dealing with emotional and physical pain. I was about a third of the way through this book when I realized it was non fiction. The medical descriptions of procedures were very vivid. I had just finished Patchett's book ,Commonwealth, and found some commonalities--powerful bonds formed between people not of blood Kin and an author using another person's story to write their book. I can see why the family of Ann Patchett's friend might be upset. Overall, it was an unforgettable read. Whether or not we find love from the opposite sex depends so much on how we look.

This book is a must read for those who like to read about life through others eyes and get all of the real, gritty, raw and unfiltered experiences. I couldn't put it down and had to read until the end.Afterwards I felt that it was one of the most honest accounts of life, friendships, love and facing the rough with the smooth that I had ever read. It takes so much courage to write like this, and I appreciated this book for what the author didn't do - for not prettying up the gory details, and for giving us the opposite of a Hollywood movie ending. The inability to feel love, to feel that there is never enough love - that is a real personality type, isn't it? Personified quite well here. And the selfless friend, Ann, who finally does set her personal boundaries provides a coming of age story as well. And finally, given that Lucy was prescribed painkillers due to her many surgeries, it seems quite likely that their use lead to heroin use. We're all the richer for facing the real issues in life head on, aren't we? I recommend that you read this book if you like books that raise more questions than answers about life. Or if you want to read a behind the scenes memoir of the "glamorous" lives of writers and poets. However - if you have preconceived notions of what life is all about and how people should behave, then this book is not for you.

Still frustrated with Lucy and her demands on other people. She would have sucked the life out of Ann, had Ann not been such a strong, well adjusted woman. A true friend to the end. Ann never asked, but I did, where was the Grealy family? She had parents, brothers and sisters.....all of whom should have been a stronger presence in her life, but instead, she clung to Ann like an appendage.Reading Ann's account of their fame was interesting and inspirational. Ann kept Lucy on track for years and with seemingly great happiness, but when Ann's life gradually took a more individual track, Lucy lost her perspective. That is when the sadness became overwhelming to the point where the reader tends to forget what Lucy could have become. As a reader, totally involved, I began to wonder who could have changed the history and I placed it squarely on the parents.....many years ago.My conclusion was that Lucy's death was not accidental. She was heading in that direction and no friendship was strong enough to stop it. Very disturbing.

Ann Patchett is simply wonderful. I have read every book she has written. I loved this book. Being from Iowa and having gone to college in Iowa City, this book was even more special.Life is hard. Having that friend that you can always count on is a wonderful thing....moments become memories, happiness becomes joy and sadness is even more profound...with that friend in your life.

Patchett is not only a careful and compelling writer but a wonderful storyteller, especially when the story is her own. This chronicle of her relationship with Lucy Grealy spans two decades and includes nearly every emotion in the book. A fierce friendship with a tragic ending. I've listened to it twice...narrated by Patchett.

This book is yet another look at author Ann Patchett's writing ability. Her friendship with Lucy, an amazingly likeable character, is frustrating at times but ultimately a strong story of love and compassion that, at times, stretches itself to the breaking point. I could not put the book down. This love for a friend challenged me to be a better friend. It also showed me the rewards of standing by our friends, regardless of circumstances.I am a huge fan of Ann Patchett and Truth and Beauty did not fail me. It was a warm and loving book, one I needed to read.Joyce NormanAuthor

This autobio was interesting although it focused more on the life of Lucy Grealy than on Ann Patchett. It made me want to read Lucy's autobio, which I'm reading now and with that piece of the puzzle in place I see a clearer picture of Lucy's life. I feel bad for Lucy as Ann was her closest friend but missed the obvious signs of drug addiction, depression, need from Lucy's book--Autobiography of a Face. It's sad Lucy went through so much pain, had very little support from her family, and her closest friends missed all the signals leading to her early death.Still a good read.

Although this book is about friendship between women I believe it is worth reading for mn and women. A great writer tells the tragic story of her friendship with another great writer as their lives progress and careers develop. It is well written: personalities, locations, experiences are all set out in a vey readable fashion. Although I often encourage reading of books that are flawed in some way, in this case I feel unqualified to comment further.
