Grade 3-6. Children from 25 alphabetically arranged countries are introduced through beautiful, full-color pictures. A map of the world highlights the countries profiled. Each nation receives a two-page spread that includes a map, flag, a few paragraphs describing the people who live there, and four or five photographs. Each selection also contains additional facts: capital, language, population, number of children in the country, favorite sports, and an environmental tidbit. Finally, other countries whose names begin with the same letter are listed. The writing is unexciting, consisting primarily of brief declarative sentences, but the tone and content reflect respect for and knowledge of the concerns of children. In a particularly nice touch, the word "Hello" is written in the country's dominant language and spelled out phonetically. To represent the letter X, the authors provide excerpts from writings by elementary school students who describe the imaginary country of Xanadu. An afterword suggests books and activities that might help children explore other cultures and become a "global citizen." In a few short, chatty paragraphs, readers learn tidbits about the land's topography, its religion, festivals, and food. A facts section gives information on the capital, languages, favorite sports, etc. But the real eyecatchers are the beautiful photographs of children at work, play, and worship. Each one celebrates the dignity and importance of children and allows readers to discover the differences and similarities among civilizations. And that imaginary land? It's Xanadu. Be advised that not all countries are included in this book; the A to Z title wrongly implies a more comprehensive collection. My son had been asking about Argentina, Chile and Peru so I bought this book thinking they would be included. They were not.The copy I received of this book was also horribly published. The countries were NOT in alphabetical order and the pages were all mixed up, so that the United States left hand page was matched with the Mexico right hand page, and the United States right hand page was after the Qatar left hand page. It's an incredibly shoddy publishing job.I'm hoping other copies are in better condition because the book IS nice. Each country that's listed has a 2-page spread with a country map, flag, and series of photos that include local children. There are some statistics for each country (capital, language, population, etc.) and some text describing the land and the people. There is also a brief list of other countries beginning with the same letter.If the pages hadn't been so badly collated, I would have kept my copy and given it a 4-star rating. A few weeks ago, to my astonishment and somewhat dismay, my preschooler (3-1/2 years old) began describing people he'd see on the street by race. I bought this book in an effort to confront the issue of race and ethnicity head on, but to discuss it in a manner that was appropriate for his age. This book is AMAZING! The photographs are gorgeous, which are likely to captivate the youngest non-readers. Early and more experienced readers will enjoy learning the interesting facts about the countries listed. Two clarifications to an earlier review. First, my copy of the book had no publishing errors. All of the countries included were listed correctly in alphabetical order. Second, this is a fairly brief book. There is only one country represented per alphabet (26 countries in all), so don't buy it expecting to learn about the specific country of your choice....it might not be included. Overall this is a great book that I highly recommend. I intend to gift it to many children.
Such a refreshing outlook on children around the world! My 4 years old daughter and I love browsing and looking at the photos and learning interesting facts about kids in other countries.Like in China kids right on the trains just like we did in our trip to Europe, that in India kids hug and "save" the trees by playing Chipko (we started doing that to our trees at home!), in Kenya boys build their own wooden bicycles and in Senegal girls wear beautiful dresses. Of course our favorite country page is Xanadu, where anything is possible and all dreams come true!This book is great for young and first reader children, the pictures say 1000 words...Elementary age children will also enjoy learning cool stats like favorite sports, games and the number of kids each country has.All in all this is an international treasure every family should have!
This book is full of beautiful, colorful pictures of children from around the world. It gives facts that children can relate to about each country and it's children. Wonderful book

Stunning photographs, concise maps, and simple text that introduces the basics of a culture, a country, and a way of life make this book great "back seat" reading. Kids shouldn't be watching tv in the car anyway. Books like this will make the ride more enjoyable and enriching. It also would be a great addition to a pediatrician's waiting room, or a dentist.
