Having been a true crime reader for many years, and spending almost 25 years with law enforcement investigative systems, it was really interesting to see what investigative tools were used so long ago. The techniques and approaches for that time were nothing short of genius - if the crimes were really solved in the way described. There were a couple of references to embellishing, and like so many stories that are passed down, I wonder how much the stories were "enhanced" through the years of telling them. Be that what it may, the book was a very interesting read and I liked the variety of cases highlighted. The inclusion of photos where available, added to the reading enjoyment. Pictures, in my opinion, are absolutely essential in both true crime reporting and in vintage storytelling. The other thing that I really liked about the book is that the author did a very good job of describing places, things, and situations without getting overly verbose. I truly appreciate that and the fact that there was no unnecessary "fillers" to make the stories longer than they had to be. The author did a fine job of giving the right amount of description, getting in there and telling the story, and moving on to the next case. I also appreciated the case updates provided at the end of each story. I will definitely seek out other volumes of vintage true crime stories.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. Crime readers may often hear that cliche, yet when a person gets a good look at crimes in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century-they will see the same crimes they read about in modern news-just with better grammar. Laws were more crude, lawyers had less technicalities to get their clients off, newspapers fed their readers and made money by sensationalism. Cain still kills Able because he could. Eve still hands Adam the fruit. These gems from the past show us that good still conquers evil sometimes. I think we all need to believe that!
I would highly recommend this to any fans of the true crime genre. Jason Lucky Morrow gathered contemporary accounts of famous (infamous) cases dating back to the late 1880s and written first hand by the detectives who were involved in solving them, Frank Dalton O'Sullivan and Thomas Furlong. The accounts are fascinating and surprisingly well-written. Something else I really enjoyed was the companion website that Morrow constructed with photos of the individuals involved along with newspaper articles offering added details about each of the cases. It provides an extra dimension to each case.
Very much enjoy reading books and stories from this writer. The amount of detailed information he is able to provide for each case is amazing. Until I discovered Mr Jason Lucky Morrows, historical crime blog on the web, HistoricalCrimeDetective.com, I never realized how thorough the news media in the past was in providing such detailed information on crimes, much more that today’s news media reports. We fans of crime stories are fortunate to have someone of Mr Morrows caliber to research and present these stories for our enjoyment. I only wish the source material for each story was incorporated into the book at the end of each story instead of having to visit a separate site to access it.
If you like vintage true crime stories, here's the real deal. Not only are the stories fascinating, they're told by the brave, clever and dedicated detectives who solved the cases. The crimes took place around the turn of the century, say between 1880 and 1920.In addition, there's a companion web page where you can find additional information such as photos and newspaper articles, so you can learn more about the cases.I find these old unheard-of cases interesting because they had to be solved without the aid of computers or modern forensics. It took footwork and brain power to unravel these mysteries.11
Having enjoyed other books by this author, I expected a certain level of quality in this most recent book. I did not expect to find this precious jewel. The stories collected are, as advertised, vintage, but the author has lovingly polished them up. No egregious typos, misspellings, or clunky phrasings here - this work is beautifully edited and a delight in which to lose one's self. Well done, sir, and here's hoping for an entire collection of volumes to follow.
A must read for true crime junkies. This book gives a wonderful look into the early days of crime investigation. The writing style of the times adds an additional layer of interest. The range of cases included shows that the world has always had the same motley assortment of good and bad people. The companion website offers additional information and links, making this even more of a bargain.
While I found this very interesting, I was disappointed that the extras weren't actually in the book, it's in another source that you're sent to upon clicking on the blue wording. Having the information included, as stated, is one of the main reasons I purchase this book. Much of the information was too small to read at the site. Some could be downloaded, but, I didn't want my kindle storage taken up with it & I don't like that you have to go from book to site & back to book to read it. However, it was just .99 so that balances out a bit. If you don't mind all the jumping back and forth, you'll find the book worthwhile.
