Review of "Leviathan or The Matter, Forme and Power of a Common-Wealth Ecclesiastical and Civill (Leviathan)," by Thomas Hobbes (b. 1588- d. 1679). Hobbes was known for his views on how humans could thrive in harmony while avoiding the perils and fear of societal conflict. His experience during a time of upheaval in England influenced his thoughts and beliefs. "All of his works concern the structure of society and legitimate government, and Leviathan is regarded as one of the earliest and most influential examples of social contract theory when it was written during the English Civil War (1642-1651)." Hobbes believed that peace and effective rule could only be achieved through a strong central government. Leviathan argues for a social contract for the subjects through rule by an absolute sovereign. For example on page 164 in Chapter XXX Of the Office of the Soveraign Representative: "Such as are Necessary: For the use of Lawes, (which are but Rules Authorised) is not to bind the People from all Voluntary actions; but to direct and keep them in such as motion, as not to hurt themselves by their own impetuous desires, rashnesse, or indiscretion, as Hedges are set, not to stop Travellers, but to keep them in the way. And therefore a Law that is not Needful, having not the true End of a Law, is not Good. A Law may be conceived to be Good, when it is for the benefit of the Soveraign; though it be not Necessary for the People; but it is not so. For the good of the Soveraign and People, cannot be separated. It is a weak Soveraign, that has weak subjects; and a weak People, whose Soveraign wanteth Power to rule them at his will. Unnecessary Lawes are not good Lawes; but trapps for Mony; which where the right of Soveraign Power is acknowledged, are superfluous; and where it is not acknowledged, unsufficient to defend the People." It is easy to see how Hobbes has clearly stated his case for central government and strong laws to serve as a bulwark against behavior that could lead to more societal upheaval (among others). As other reviewers have stated this is somewhat difficult reading as it was composed and remains in Old English. The syntax and organization may be different than what the reader may be used to. In the final analysis Leviathan supports the view that a person's moral and/or political obligations are dependent upon a contract or agreement among them to form the society in which they live. Five stars.

My take-away from the first half of the book was that in order to maintain civil society, all citizens must adhere without objection to all laws and regulations of the whatever type of government be in power. This would be true for Monarchies, Aristocracies or Democracies. Since the individual is beholden to the sovereign government for their survival and not falling into chaos, they have no recourse but to obey absolutely, regardless of their religious beliefs.The second half focuses on chapter/verses of the Old and New Testaments that support Hobbes' contention that the Church/clergy has no real governing power but what is granted by the country's sovereign government. His other tangents describe the Catholic church's retention of gentile/Hellenistic rituals and idols, thereby diluting a reasoned/natural approach to the Church's teaching. His derision of Aristotle seems mainly based on a superficial analysis of the metaphysical word games played by philosophical persons living idle lifestyles.

Understandably this book was written to the prince or king at the time of how to centralize power from monarchies to statehood. It is an insight to how the power structure operates and its intended goals. You cannot legislate morality and you cannot make men charitable by forcing them to give. And much to the annoyance of Plato, no amount of education or cultural refinement can immunize man to the ever present threats of avarice, arrogance, and blind ambition. There must be checks on this power if men are to retain their hard-fought liberty and if the ultimate power of the government is to maintain its rightful abode with the People.As we in America have learned, there is a concept of government much more attuned to the particulars of human nature than the false bravado of Leviathan. It is limited government, where every individual choose for himself what he thinks is best, to the degree that he does not infringe on the natural rights of his fellows. Freedom of oppression from the government is our nation's calling card, and it has empowered and enriched man to a degree never before imagined. It seems that man's natural state, when guaranteed certain inalienable rights, was far flung indeed from an interminable warfare on his neighbors.So, Hobbes had a lot to learn but perhaps not the opportunity to do so. However, I did enjoy and learn much from him in his thorough and unbiased defense of his monarchical position using the Scriptures. He has an immense mastery of them, and cuts through some of the more confusing points of contention between the Anglican and Roman Catholic churches. He even goes so far as to address the varying degrees of heaven, the existence (or not) of an everlasting Hell, and Baptism for the Dead. It provided me with an excellent base from which to further understand the faith of the early American colonists and the churches they established in the lead-up to the American Revolution.Still, this is one of the more difficult books on this subject I've yet to slog through and so be warned that you may want to start with some lighter tomes on this subject.

George Saunders is the author of eight books, including the story collections Pastoralia and Tenth of December, which was a finalist for the National Book Award. He has received fellowships from the Lannan Foundation, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Guggenheim Foundation. In 2006 he was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship. In 2013 he was awarded the PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in Short Fiction and was included in Time’s list of the one hundred most influential people in the world. Before you crack open George Saunders' new (first) novel, "Lincoln in the Bardo", you must empty your mind of what you expect an historical novel to be. Both the structure and the narrative are incredibly non-traditional, somewhat experimental, often disorienting, but ultimately fulfilling. Let me assure you that if you open your mind, you'll not only get used to it, you will enjoy it thoroughly.That said, I think "Lincoln in the Bardo" would work even better as a stage play, somewhat reminiscent of "Our Town", and in this sense I think an audio recording of the novel, if done well, might be the best way to experience this work.Bardo is a Tibetan word for the "in-between" or "transitional" state between lives (thank you, Wikipedia). The novel takes place in one night in a cemetery and the story is narrated by hundreds of voices: old and young, men, women, and children, white and black, salve and free. These denizens of Saunders' novel are in a place between life and death. We are told that people stay in this gray area for varying periods of time and that children usually stay there a very short time (this is where it also sounded a lot like Purgatory to me). Do these "beings" know that they are actually dead? They use words like "sick box" for coffin, and "sick-form" for body, "white stone home" for mausoleum, so they seem to be unclear as to their actual state. Through these voices Saunders creates as fascinating (and chilling) a version of the after-life as Dante Alighieri gave us. (There is a particularly interesting and notable discussion among them about free will in the latter part of the novel.)The basic plot is fictionalized history: Willie, Abraham Lincoln's young son, has died and he is now in the Bardo. Here we meet the many fascinating - and funny! characters who show Willie around, who witness the unusual sight of Lincoln cradling the body of his young son, and who endeavor to help both father and son to find peace. That's as far as I will go with the "plot" of this novel.One of my favorite things about this unique novel, was how Saunders presented conflicting "news reports". For example, when reporting on the White House gala reception the night Willie is dying, some "witnesses" said there was a full moon, some said there was no moon, some said it was green, some red, others said it was just a sliver. This serves to remind us that recorded history is just as unreliable as our current news reporting. What is the truth? Do we ever know? For the purpose of "Lincoln in the Bardo", we only need to know that the Lincolns did lose their beloved son Willie in early 1862, all else is brilliantly imagined and "reported" by Saunders.Ultimately "Lincoln in the Bardo" is a riveting exploration of death, grief, and love told in an utterly unique, almost poetic, fashion.

I was expecting a lot from this book and I'm sorry to say I was disappointed.It's clear to me that I can't fully appreciate Mr. Saunders alternative writing and since the onset I had a complicated relationship with this book (there were sections where I felt completely lost) I tried my hardest to like it, I really did.I know a few people who has swooned over this book. Not me. There is a very good chance that my aversion betrays a complete lack of understanding on my part.But in all honesty, I can't recommend it to anyone.

I almost want to break this review into two parts. One for those who know Saunders and one for those who’ll be experiencing him for the first time. What does it matter? Well, you’re about to hear and read a lot about this book, Lincoln in the Bardo, about Saunders himself (there was so much press with Tenth of December that I feel like he and I have hung out multiple times; that I know all his stories), and about his genius. Then, if you’ve never read him, and especially if you haven’t read much in the way of modern or post-modern literature, you’re going to pick up this book and put it down in about five minutes. That, dear readers, would be a grave (see what I did there?) error, a real tragedy. Why? Because Saunders’ much anticipated first novel really is as genius as the stories and interviews and blurbs are going to claim, but you have to do a little more of the work as a reader than you might be used to.Much anticipated is the phrase you’ll probably hear most. What that should tell you is that Saunders has a strong fan base. He truly does, and full disclosure here, I’ve counted myself among them for a few years now. His mastery of the short story is well known, with the use of quirky characters, odd theme parks, and surreal science fiction-y, angst inducing situations known to take you to dark, uncomfortable places but that still manage to find and nourish a spark of humanistic hope. Perhaps the most common feeling among his readers as they’ve enjoyed these works is “man, I wish this guy would write a novel!” He has, and in true Saunders fashion, he’s ensured that very little about the experience is “normal”.I’m not going to regurgitate plot here, plenty of better reviews have already done you that favor. What I do want to make sure to express is the feel of the structure and the experience, perhaps in terms of other things you’ve read and seen. The most common comparison I’ve read is Edgar Lee Masters’ “Spoon River Anthology”. The comparison is apt, there are similarities, mainly in that the dead speak to us of their pasts and especially of their mistakes. But Masters’ dead are much less playful and rarely attempt humor while Saunders’ cast of spirits deliver several laugh out loud moments as they guide readers through the tale. I thought often of Twain as I read.Another comparison that came to mind several times was Dante’s Inferno. Though instead of a proper hell, we are treated to a description of a Bardo, a purgatory where spirits have remained in between their death and their final destination. Each held up for reasons of their own personal obsessions, several of which are brilliantly and humorously described throughout the novel. Others are devastatingly sad yet delivered equally as powerfully. The reader increasingly learns about the rules and behaviors of that Bardo through these snippets of stories.This is probably a good time to talk about structure. It’s quite different and again, I’d expect no less from Saunders. Picture a Greek chorus, a paragraph or two of dialog (rarely more) with an attribution after each. It is startling at first and again, will be especially so to readers less familiar with modern and post-modern lit. And so it is this difference that will probably be the biggest complaint as the reviews begin to pile up here. My advice? Hang in there, it works and it works quite well. In fact, you’ll not only get used to it, you’ll learn to love it.More comparisons now. Lincoln, the titular and in some ways central (though in many ways not) character expresses the most powerful dialog and I often thought of Shakespeare when Lincoln spoke. These are beautiful and profound moments, by far the novel’s most powerful as he reflects on the death of his son Willie. You don’t have to be a parent to feel the impact of his dialog, but it sure didn’t hurt, and I personally haven’t read such raw, sincere and painful cogitation on death and mourning since I read Twain’s “The Death of Jean”. Readers of Paul Hardings’ Enon have also tasted of similar parental agony. In any case, it is through Lincoln’s character that the deepest waters flow.One other comparative thought, especially if you’re hearing all the publicity and thinking of picking up this novel for grandma who loves to read. It’ll also bring to mind at various times Beavis and Butthead, or maybe Hank and Bobby Hill. I don’t mean that as a negative, I really don’t. But I do understand that this is something about Saunders that people either love or hate. At one moment Lincoln may wax eloquent on the spark of life and in the next, you may be reminded for the tenth time or more that one of the spirits has a massive erection. These moments bring me joy and laughter, but I do comprehend that for some others they don’t carry the proper dignity of their normal read. If you are one such, Saunders may not be for you.Most importantly, I’d implore all readers to keep an open mind. If you’re a Saunders fan, you’re going to be strengthened in that fandom. If you’re new to Saunders, but enjoy alternative structures and have a history of adventurous reading, I’m confident you’ll soon count yourself a soldier in his army. However, if you’re one whose reading tends toward the traditional, conservative in structure and clear in its identity, then Lincoln in the Bardo’s narrative structure and its moments of revelry may at first feel like nails on a chalkboard to you. Please, fight through it. The novel's main points could yet become for you sweet susurrations of humanistic glory that leave you wet eyed and wondering where Mr. Saunders has been all your life.

This is the second volume of Solzhenitsyn's epic "The Red Wheel" and, unlike "August 1914", this book focuses more on Russian society than the war. A number of the same characters return from the first work and Solzhenitsyn takes them, and the reader, to the parlors of St. Petersburg, the homes of Moscow, the trenches, the schools, the factories, the farms, and the legislative assemblies. It is an astonishing work, capturing the mood in Russia before chaos consumed her and showing the last days of a failing society.There are some flaws. Solzhenitsyn continues using the "camera eye" technique that he used in the first novel and, again, does not quite succeed with it. He is better in his use of newspaper headlines than he was in "August 1914." Where he truly fails though is in the numerous essays he includes giving the history of political parties, legislative leaders, even transcripts from the Duma debates. It is a bit too much and Solzhenitsyn is not particularly subtle in his contempt for progressives and society.Where Solzhenitsyn excels is when his characters dominate the narrative. Above all, the powers of redemption and love flow through the book despite the chaos, despite the coming Soviet horror. There are scenes that remain with the reader: a priest and a young officer talking about faith in the trenches; a colonel who comes to St. Petersburg to make a major political impact only to have it undermined by his attraction to a woman, a woman going to confession crying over her dead child, a writer on a train and his assorted notes and musings. This is an epic book to be sure but Solzhenitsyn is truly incredible when he describes the intimate moments of daily life.Be warned. While the book was translated in English a decade ago, the last two volumes have yet to be translated. Despite the book going on for 1,000 pages and a difficult read, you will want more. "The Red Wheel" is not for everyone but those who pursue it will find one of the greatest novels written in the last half of the twentieth century.

Since I've never had the energy to read Trotsky (although I've read Deutscher's biography of him), this is the most detailed account I've ever read of the Russian Revolution and the circumstances that led up to it. Solzhenitsyn's main protagonist, Colonel Vorotyntsev, is a soldier on the front in the Balkans. For most of the novel he goes on leave to Moscow and Petersburg, trying to understand why the war is being managed so badly and to find the people in charge and make some improvements.Solzhenitsyn covers almost all of European Russian society in his book, from peasants in the army and on leave, up to the muddled Nicholas II. (A friend of mine who had been for many years a member of the American Communist Party, when I mentioned Solzhenitsyn, roared, "That bastard wants to bring back the Tsar." From reading this book, I think that not likely.) Rasputin, I'm vulgarly sorry to say, never makes an appearance, except as "Our Friend" in the atrocious gossipy, malicious letters that the Tsaritsa (known to all Solzhenitsyn's Russians as "Alix") writes to her husband. Solzhenitsyn--we can guess--has no sympathy for Lenin, but he attempts to get inside that man's head and life--and shows him practically as a dupe of Helphand. The Duma comes off as a useless debating society in which it is more important to top the previous speaker than to make effective change. The Kadets--short for "Constitutional Democrats"--which might have been the stable democratic center that Nabokov admired (his father was a high-ranking Kadet) come across as wishy-washy and unable to resist being opportunists pulled by the historically powerful Left (Social Democrats, and the occasional Social Revolutionary.) The only good politician in Solzhenitsyn's estimation, as far as I can tell, is Stolypin.I hope the shorthand recounting of the book's historical matters doesn't put the reader off. Here's Russian history written by an interested Russian and an undeniably great writer, and though I liked some parts of the book better than others, I was never bored by it. Nor will you be. Obviously you should read 1914 first.

This is the second in the series and although the books are long, if you love history and want to understand the Russian revolution these are for you. I recommend starting with August 1914 which vividly describes the heroism of the Russian soldier who is so miserably led into a botched invasion of Germany. Solzhenitsyn is masterful in his bringing his characters to life from soldiers enduring the horrors of WW I on the Eastern front to the revolutionaries who are slowly pulling Russia from the frying pan into the fire. I found myself flying through both books and was saddened to see them end. Looking forward to starting the final book to see how the characters I've grown so attached to wind up when the bottom finally falls out. This is the modern War and Peace.

Unless one is a professional reviewer or critic, it is hard to summarize Solzhenitsyn's second volume (of three) in the Red Wheel. (The original Russian has five volumes, the English translation is 'abridged" into three.) Reading Solzhenitsyn is like being swept along in a tidal wave of history, personal history, dramatic story, poetry, commentary, and analysis. There is no point in fighting Solzhenitsyn's surge of energy, love, and sorrow about Russia, its peoples, its history, its glory and corruption. No words of mine can convey adequately the experience of simply reading this book.it will take you some time--it's 1,000 pages long--but I thought my time was well-spent and my horizons expanded enormously.I'm sort of on a Solzhenitsyn jag right now. I've read the Gulag Archipelago, One Day in the Life, and the first volume of this trilogy. The third volume and the Cancer War are on my to-read table. I also read a good historical compilation of Solzhenitsyn's work, The Soul and Barbed Wire, which has given me some perspective on Solzhenitsyn's life and writing.

All you need is this book. I bought his indexing book also but this one covers it all. A good complete treatment by someone that seems honest, not-reckless, and on your side. Thank you Richard! My retirement is safer with these new investment vehicles called etfs.Goodby to broker miss-information and obfuscation. And I don't have to send a check to some unknown mutual fund in a far city, I can buy them from a local online broker without hidden loads.Finally the investment industry comes of age. About time. And the 1099 tax statement is finally provided each year by the online broker.

The book has useful fundamental and universally-applicable information that helps understanding the mechanics and inner-workings of ETFs and the market participants involved with ETFs. That's a "pro". One "con" is that I feel that the volume has been inflated by frequent and not well-warranted inclusion of particulars of specific individual products that are not relevant in the broad context. Those parts come across as distractions.

This is a great book for content: very thorough introduction to ETFs; compares ETFs to mutual funds and describes other exchange traded securities that may be confused with real ETFs. Recommended reading before getting into ETF investing. (Recommended supplementary work: the ETF section of morningstar.com. Note: I have no connection to Morningstar, just a long time user).About the Kindle edition: the Kindle formating is pretty bad. The line spacing compared to the type size is very close and tight, which makes for tiresome reading. Some books' formats simply don't seem to convert well for Kindle, and this is one of them.On the plus side for Kindle: all the tables and charts are readable; although you may need to look closely, the text is readable, which is more than I can say for some Kindle editions of books with charts & graphs.

The ETF Book: All You Need to Know About Exchange-Traded FundsI have been a long-term fan of low-cost, passive investing (i.e. index funds) and have read all of Mr. Ferri's books. Recently, I have begun using ETFs in place of index funds.Mr. Ferri's book is a well-researched, complete guide to ETFs. I believe it will be viewed as the definitive ETF book because of its wide-ranging coverage of everything from how ETFs can be used in a portfolio to details of ETF construction.The practical tips (e.g. don't trade an ETF at the beginning or end of a trading day) alone are worth the price of the book. Also, I really like the detailed information on how various ETFs (e.g. gold ETFs) are constructed.Great resource for individual investors as well as for professionals!

Rick Ferri has done it again. I got this book as I was looking actively for a good "introductory" book on ETFs. I already read Rick's "All About Asset Allocation" and like it very much. So I did not hesitate to preorder this book.This book does a great job in INTRODUCING indexing and ETF's. It covers a lot of ground about various types of ETFs their pros and cons. There are lot of finer points spread throughout the book which are interesting for people starting new and are hard to come across on web for an average web user like me - eg: pros and cons of Vanguard ETF (VIPER) structure where its ETFs are another class of shares of its index mutual funds. I would have rated this 5 stars except for some repetition of text multiple times in multiple chapters about types of indexing etc in Parts II and Part III of the book. Model portfolios section could have been dealt better.

A wonderful trip through ETFs. Book is well worth the money and I am sure worth more. Yet, while I'd suggest this book for any mutual fund investor, still, the more I read in this area the more I am convinced that I'll just "keep it simple" and stick with Dodge and Cox and Vanguard Funds ("admiral" or otherwise!) and probably Loomis-Sayles. Still, this book should be read by most mutual fund investors.Ferri's work is a credit to the field, surely a credit to him and I'll add a credit to Walsh College (where I believe Rick is on or was on the adjunct faculty).John

According to the book, there are currently more than 1000 ETFs trading in the US representing more than $1 trillion, and it is very possible that the assets invested in EFTs could surpass open ended mutual funds within 10 years.This book helps you develop an understanding of one of the most important new investment options in the past 20 years. The book describes the differences between the various forms of exchange traded portfolios (e.g., Regulated Investment Company Open-End ETFs, ETNs, RIC Vaguard ETFs, etc.)The book uses Index Strategy Boxes (a 3 by 3 which describes the method of security selection and security weighting within an index) as an effective framework to promote understanding of individual ETFs.There are discussions of strategies for general (passive and active) and special cases (e.g., concentrated positions).This is a bit heavier than Rick's earlier book "All About Asset Allocation" which I read in about a day, but it is definitely worth the time if you manage your own investments.The ETF Book makes effective use of diagrams and tables, and has good references (books and websites) and a glossary.

I have never heard of a textbook where THEY GET THE ANSWERS WRONG IN THE BACK OF THE BOOK. I've noticed this multiple times, each time spending around half an hour struggling to figure out how to get the same answer as them, before I realized, yet again, they were wrong. Who were the monkeys who made this crap? It's not just me being crazy, I looked online and people were having this problem with the 4th edition too. This is the fifth edition, and they still never got around to fixing something this important. They can move crap around so they can charge $200 more than before, but they can't fix blatant errors. And I've seen the sixth edition from a friend, and aside from page numbers being different so you can't follow along in a class that uses a different edition, there is seemingly no difference between them. This is the most blatant proof I've ever seen of the whole textbook industry being a scam and pure corruption.

I purchased this book new from Amazon because my daughter was told she needed a "new" book by her instructor so they could use the access code for the online Pearson labs. Upon receiving the book and attempting to activate the code on the Pearson site (the code inside the cover appeared new, and had to be scratched off), she was told the code was invalid. Thankfully she was able to reach a customer service representative who was able to generate her a new code, otherwise she would have had to pay a few hundred dollars more again for another code.Considering the outrageous cost of these textbooks, this is unacceptable.

I had my choice of taking a pre-calc track college algebra course using this book, or another using a book by a guy named Sullivan. I'm the kind of geek who will investigate course textbooks before I waste my time signing up for a class, especially with challenging material, like pre-calc algebra. Or it's challenging to a former liberal arts major like me.Sullivan was dry, boring, confusing and seemed deliberately abstruse in presenting the material. If you take a course using his book, you were guaranteed to spend a lot of time falling asleep from reading his dry, boring material--when you weren't on Khan Academy, in math labs and with math tutors trying to understand anything at all about what he was covering. Did I mention that his book is dry and boring? It's so dry and boring that it almost made me hate math--and I'm a math major!Blitzer is more direct and explains things in simpler terms, with numerous step-by-step examples to help you pick up how things work. He has a Great Questions feature that frequently covers the "bottom line" about complex material that gets to the heart of things and provides effective short cuts to understanding concepts in a memorable way. He explains things so well that you can teach yourself with his book, and this is NOT easy material for self-study. Unless you're a math genius, you could never do that with Sullivan.If you have a choice, like I do, and you're worried about understanding precalculus, take the class that uses this book. You won't regret it.

If you have ever used other math books or you're not a math person, you will be happy with Blitzer math textbooks. Out of all the math books I've used, Blitzer's tend to be the best. They are clear, concise, and show plenty of examples, which is something students tend to want above all else in a math book. Many textbooks tend to show only one or two examples per section or task. Blitzer's books show many. This book will do you justice if you're required to have it for a college algebra and/or trigonometry class.Please note that this package COMES WITH MYMATHLAB, as stated above. Do NOT buy it separately if you buy this product; the code comes with this. Amazon is offering another version that is just the textbook. DO NOT BUY THAT if you need MML. Currently, if your professor requires MML, this product is the best option. Do not buy the textbook and MML separately, unless you can get a used book for cheap (ie under 120ish), because it will not be worth it.

This book has everything you are going to need to learn Pre-Calculus. It has a good refreshing section at the beginning and each topic is standard with its theorems, definitions, then detailed problems step by step, reasons behind them, variety, and practice problems with solutions on the back. The solutions do not have supporting explanations but the example problems are not too challenging. This book works as an introductory to Pre-Calc and is not a source of challenging problems. For those, you will need to use the Math lab access code that comes with it, go to the internet, or get another book.This book comes with an online access code to use the internet for online lessons and Math Lab. If you are buying a used book, make sure you call to confirm that it has the access code, but be aware that used books usually do not have it because the previous owner already registered it on his or her own name. Better buy new. If this is required by your university or school, you will be in a pickle if your books comes without one. That Math Lab is a life saver because it provides detailed step by step instructions how to solve the math problems and newer versions come with online lessons too.Another point to check is that if you buy either older or new editions of Blitzer, make sure you have the required power and security access to use the online lab and lessons because the online book will not load properly if your computer is a dinosaur. Other times, the access code is no longer available because the edition is too old or too new and your computer does not support it.There is a web site they have that checks your computer to make sure you have the right stuff to open the books and lab.This tip will save you a lot of grief.

I buy these books by the pile and share with friends, family, and strangers. After all, that's how I came into possession of my first copy. This is not light reading for a sunny afternoon, but the subjects are broken down enough to where you can pick it up, pick a page and read for a while. This is a great choice for church book groups, Confirmation gifts, new parents, old parents, Lent reading, or anyone looking for another way to see things. This should be mandatory reading for Catholics, though Catholicism is not mandatory to benefit from this book. I recently gave a new copy to a man who was struggling with anger after the loss of his mother. He was "spiritual" on the best of days though didn't identify as Christian. I have not seen him since, but I heard later that he's rarely seen without his now well worn dog-eared & high lighted copy and his attitude and work ethic both have improved. Enjoy.

Many of the late mediaeval Christian mystical texts are quite otherworldly and/or erudite, as fits the issue of mysticism. They are often so internally focused and spiritual in nature that, though beautiful and useful in their own right, leave something to be desired for the modern believer searching for a more practical approach to fighting the spiritual warfare of everyday life. Scupoli's work is both spiritual and eminently practical. It is a handbook for the daily battle written by an old veteran. Scupoli's years of experience as a spiritual guide come through in the wisdom and perspective that pervades this book. I am a Protestant and there is more than enough guidance for me and other non-Catholics in the work due to the author's practical standpoint. It does not go into the issues of systematic theology that would be a barrier for many of the various Christian traditions. The only exceptions to this point would be the entire chapter dedicated to the importance of the mass, and in the little reminders spread throughout the book that it was written for monks under the authority of their religious superiors. These issues are easily put aside without doing any real violence to the basics of Scupoli's teachings and guidance. It would be good if every Christian were able to carry this book around in his/her pocket wherever they went (along with the Bible of course.)

We live in dark and dangerous times. People have kicked God out of their lives and the devil is filling the void. This book is an excellent guide to fighting the demons that affect our lives in a negative way.

St Francis de Sales carried this book with him wherever he went and for the rest of his life. It is a nuts and bolts manual of how to fight the spiritual battle for our souls on a daily basis. Those who aren't fighting have already lost the battle. This book FILLS A HUGE GAP in most Catholics religious formation by showing us exactly how to achieve sanctity and grow in virtue. Our reason is acted upon by God from above and our appetites from below. This is the essence of spiritual combat. The author outlines the steps and aids (confession , communion, among others) to help us be victorious in our daily quest for sanctity. I also recommend St Ignatius works on spiritual discernment, the examine prayer and making decisions spiritually. Father Gallagher's books and talks on them are excellent and practical.

The most outstanding qualities of this book are its timeless appeal and its treatment of morality and prayer. It is difficult to find current literature that treats the spiritual journey with such genuine concern for the soul no matter how challenging the message is at times. I have occasionally seen excerpts from this book used by other writers and decided that I wanted to "go to the source." I recommend this book to anyone who is willing to encounter a serious discussion in their quest to become a more spiritual person.

This is a good book on the practical issues surrounding sanctification. Although it is from a pre-Reformation Catholic perspective any Pietist (i.e. Baptist, Methodist, etc.) would find it an enjoyable and practical read. It provides practical ways to battle against personal sin and draw closer to Jesus Christ, the one, true God.

I really wanted to give this a rating of 3 at first bc I found at times this was difficult to understand. But it was also very mind boggling also and thought provoking. It’s one of those books where I would definitely reread again soon to get more out of it.
