For such a prevalent and pressing situation here and throughout the world it is surprising that so little has been written that is at this high caliber. I am currently training to become a sexual assault/domestic violence advocate in my community and this book was not only inspirational it is much needed honest information. The male voices are very welcome because we hardly hear about them. I am a minister. This book is going to be a great reference for my new ministry helping women who've been victimized. Read this book!

This is a great book and provides wonderful insights. The honesty and authenticity really impacted me. I found myself thinking about situations in my life and my loved ones' lives with new perspective. With all the horrible news in the world, this book shows that there are genuinely kind people who care and love. That there is a way forward. That there is always hope. I'm grateful that this book was recommended to me and I recommend it even if you haven't experienced sexual violence personally. It's a very meaningful read.

This book was impactful, informative and simply a great read! This author shares the story of the victims by letting the victims speak for themselves. Too often I have picked up a book in which someone is talking in the 3rd person about an issue as sensitive as sexual abuse. This book lets you hear directly from various 'Survivors." The subject is indeed a sensitive subject, yet we all know someone who can benefit from this great read. I decided to purchase a few copies for the holiday and share it with a few people I know who have been victims.

My book never arrived.

To the Survivors is easy to read! I found myself not wanting to put it down. It is a great resource for anyone out there that has survived rape or sexual abuse. There is something so incredibly powerful and impactful about hearing the stories of each survivor. I believe that anyone who has been affected by this horrific crime should read this. There is hope and light at the end of the tunnel and this book proves it!

The stories also allowed Sís's father to relate an odyssey other adults didn't seem to want to know about in cold war Czechoslovakia. In this visually enticing, magically appealing, oversized volume, Czechoslovakian-born illustrator Sis applies his considerable gifts to painting a spellbinding portrait of his father's experiences in Tibet, where he was sent in the 1950s to instruct the Chinese in documentary filmmaking. Vladimir Sis was actually drafted by the Chinese government to record the construction of a highway from China into Tibet; he was to be gone more than two years, unable to communicate with his family. During that time, China invaded the neighboring country, and Sis senior witnessed events he dared not describe even after he returned home, except through "magical stories" he related to his son. The diary he kept during his sojourn in Tibet was locked in a red box, which his son only saw for the first time in 1994, when he received a cryptic message from his father: "The diary is now yours." Here Sis re-creates a facsimile of the diary with excerpts handwritten upon parchment-like backgrounds on double-page spreads brimming with pencil sketches of the events described (e.g., "The road looks like a cut into a beautiful cake"). He then magnifies the more uncanny aspects of the journal via the tales told to him by his father, recollected from childhood, which are printed on the succeeding spread. I have not yet shared this book with my granddaughters. I purchased it to go along with Barbie doll from Tibet. It was not easy to find something on Tibet for children. However, this is not really a children's book.Sis open's a box which contains his father's diary. His father had left his family for an assignment in China where he was to teach a group of Chinese men how to do filming, as this was his father's expertise. They are to film the building of a road that stretches into the Tibetan Himalayas. But things go wrong and the father and his aide fall into a series of events that are told in the diary.Some of the entries are vague and surreal. We are left wondering if the father was hallucinating from illness, or has been given medicines that might cause them, or is attributing his experiences to real magical events that rightfully belong in the high Himalayas, either from the thin air effecting the brain, or from association with the monks.Because adults can look back in retrospect from the murderous invasion of the Chinese into Tibet, the adult reader feels a tension from the diary entries that reveal the Chinese building the road to Tibet that will allow that invasion to take place. All the while the peaceful gentle people of Tibet have no inclination that this is going on.There is a story within a story here as well. Sis has a serious illness as a child and his memories of his father are effected by that illness, as well as the way in which he handles the fact that his father does not return. No on knows what has happened to the father. The family endures hardships and anxiety on this account.The artistry by Sis is appropriate to the text, but is not particularly appealing to children. Neither is the story-line. I would not recommend it for children. but it does not have the elements that you would want in a book for adults either. It doesn't really have a plot, nor well drawn characters. It might be called a poetic prose piece. It is informative, realistic, and revealing at the same time that is is magical, sensitive and heart wrenching. In short, it stands alone as a literary type. I did enjoy it.

However, it is one of the new subgenre of "children's books for adults" - it may look like a picture book, but it is *not* suitable for young children.Tibet is very like Maus: A Survivor's Tale, the award-winning graphic novel that bears only superficial resemblance to a standard graphic novel. In Tibet, as in Maus, a son tells his father's story - and what a story it is. Peter Sis' father was a documentary filmmaker who was hired by the Chinese to make a documentary about the building of a bridge in a remote province - and instead ended up losing his crew and witnessing the taking of Tibet.Sis does a remarkable job of transmitting to the reader his father's love of Tibet and its mysteries and magic. Using tales his father told him, he creates an image of a dream land, a fantasy land, where weird and wonderful things happen. It's impossible not to love Sis' vision of Tibet - and therefore, impossible not to be sad that the Chinese take it.I've said that the book is not for children, and I stand by that. However, I do believe that a child who is 6 or older could enjoy this book, provided it was read to him by an adult, and provided that that adult could cushion and explain some of the harder truths, not to mention some of the blending of fantasy and fact.Peter Sis' father's story is incredible, and the book is marvelous. Any adult who loves books or history would love Tibet: Through the Red Box.

I loved this story and the magic of it all....it makes one wonder about the magic and possibilities in our own lives that may seem quite humdrum at times...but are all of the coincidences that we encounter really coincidences or is there more meaning than we are open for or looking for in our life experiences....the people that we meet..etc.

This is such a cool dreamlike book. I don't know if it's real or surreal, but the stories and pictures are captivating. I have it sitting atop my kids' bookshelf with one other book I don't want them to mess up (Billy's Balloon Ride), and now that my kids are three, I think I need to start reading it to them.

Having been to Tibet in 2012, this book brought tears to my eyes for its beauty and poignancy. This is the real story - a real, personal story. If you have any interest in Tibet, you will want to read this. And Peter Sis's drawings are exquisite.

This book is a tresure. Wonderful illustrations, great story. It shows kids Tibet as it was more than 50 years ago.

It is my most favored possession and I read it 3 or 4 times a year and never cease to be inspired by it anew. Visually stunning with a magical story line that will leave you believing in miracles. I just now finished "Devotion" by Dani Shapiro and felt inclined to write a review in the hopes it would inspire someone else to read it. One of the finest memoirs I have ever read, beautifully written and insightful. I am also in the afternoon of my life and I'm also a seeker so I related on so many levels. Bravo, Dani Shapiro and thank you

I enjoyed this book. Being from an area of the country with very little Jewish culture, I felt like I learned quite a bit about the religion, culture and people. I also found her journey circling around faith very interesting and there were areas where I could relate, even though I was not raised with religion. It seems like her religious upbringing caused her some pain and left her with many large unanswered questions and internal struggles about life, faith and family that she may still struggle with. It makes me wonder why she would choose to pass that down to her son by enrolling him in Hebrew school. It has always fascinated me when people leave a faith with a struggle and then choose to raise their children in it, even if they don't practice it. Doesn't that just set them up for the same struggle or an even more confusing one? I'm sure there are reasons, but maybe by being raised in a secular household I will ever understand them. Interesting book, I recommend it.

I'm a sucker for books about spiritual struggles as I've been having my own for about ten years. It gave me a lot of insight into the Jewish faith as well. I was initially drawn to this book because of the spiritual side but I found solace in her writing about her son's seizure disorder. My daughter also suffers from severe epilepsy and it's not something written about in this context often. How she described not wanting to to socialize with other mother's at preschool with their "normal" kids and the constant fear of the next seizure are both feelings I've lived with. I've read several negative reviews about this book being overly materialistic or self absorbed and in other books that may have bothered me too but here it didn't. No amount of things or money can bring any comfort when watching your child have uncontrollable seizures. This came across to me as she was describing her affluent lifestyle. Overall, I thought it was a thoughtful memoir and I'm better for having read it.

I have a visceral dislike of inspirational books, the kind where someone seeks, finds her answer and then blissfully believes anyone can do the same if they do what she does. So this book sat on my Kindle for several months because I was afraid she would be like that. This rainy Sunday I started reading and I simply could not stop until I finished this evening. I could see myself in her and rejoiced in the absence of smugness or certainty.I recommend this for seekers who have a sense of humor and do not expect to find an answer. I place this book in the company of books by Annie Dillard and Ann Lamott -- women I wish I could spend a weekend with talking about life.

Devotion: A Memoir by Dani Shapiro is an excellent read. She speaks of growing up Jewish and always feeling lost in life. She embarks upon a path to 'find' herself and begins to embrace yoga and meditation. Strangely enough, she decides to attend a book signing (for her book) and ends up sitting next to a renowned yoga author. She was in actuality reading his book at the time that the met him. Dani Shapiro begins to feel a sense of samsara, or recognizes she is going through a journey in life. She starts feeling lost and starts to feel a sense of home, and finds stillness of mind with meditation and yoga. She no longer feels a sense of abandonment and begins to embrace life fully.

As someone else said, I feel compelled to write a review in the hope of inspiring others to read it. As I struggle to start my own memoir, both memoirs that I have read by Dani have touched my heart and soul. I guess they give me solace that others have the same life thoughts and questions that I have. I was taken by the quote in the book from Jung "Thoroughly unprepared, we take the step into the afternoon of life". And I think by Dani herself, "We live on the edge of melancholy".

I had three months (conveniently punctuated by Christmas, no less!) to learn some Spanish before we headed out on a trip to Costa Rica, so after doing a little research I picked up this wonderful book for grammar and vocabulary and Synergy Spanish for an audio component. Both worked excellently for their respective purposes. Despite only making it through 11 sections before we left, I found this book to be easy to understand, efficiently thorough, and actually very fun to use. Many of the translation exercises pull from pop culture like translating a paragraph about Ron Weasley, Hermione Grainger, and Harry Potter. The way this book is organized means that you can see results nearly immediately, and the flash card app for your smartphone makes it very simple to practice the vocabulary for each chapter.I am a homeschooling Mom, and as soon as my 11-year old daughter saw how much fun I was having with my Spanish book, she requested on too and has been diligently working on even on weekends. Then my 13-year old daughter, who is studying French, decided she wanted the French version. When my Mother, who has studied French for several years, was over recently, my 13yo showed Mom her French book, and now my Mother is buying one for herself to review the French grammar. In the course of homeschooling our six children, I have looked over and tried out several different language programs including Rosetta Stone, Pimsleur, Duolingo (which isn't exactly a complete program), and for Spanish I think that the combination of this book and Synergy Spanish is the most effective that I've found so far. Quite excellent and fun!While most of the people we came across in Costa Rica spoke English, I did know enough Spanish to be able to order meals and communicate other things like "Can I go there?" and was very happy to know at least the minimal Spanish that I did. I plan to continue and complete this book in advance of an upcoming trip to Belize. Overall, I love this book and have been recommending it to all my other homeschooling and traveling friends.

If you're looking for a detailed explanation of the Spanish language, this is not the book for you. This is more of a workbook that allows you to practice what you learn more than anything.Pros:- TONS of practice material. The whole book is nothing but practice problems- Charts and pictures to help you see the words or conjugations- Review sections at the end of each chapter that incorporate everything you just learned- Language lab is nice to have on your phone. Good way to learn vocab without the bookCons:- No detailed explanations of Why a sentence is structured a certain way. It just "is".- Uses words it hasn't taught you yet and that aren't contained in the glossaryAll in all, it is a great practice book. If paired with another book explaining the grammatical ways of spanish, you would have no problem learning the Spanish language

This is a fantastic, easy to understand workbook.I am taking a weekly spanish class that uses the yellow book "Easy Spanish Step by Step" and I'm using this one daily. This book is very easy to use and the exercises in it are great. They are very easy to understand and the directions are very concise.If I didn't have a Spanish teacher I would feel confident with the vocabulary and grammar taught from this book. My Spanish teacher can tell that I'm supplementing my learning with another book. The vocabulary given in this book is great to use on flashcards and they are common/everyday words you can mix in with your English to practice.I would definitely recommend this book and the app that goes along with it to check your answers.

This book has been incredibly helpful. I've been using apps like Duolingo and Babbel, which are great, but they leave out the structural and grammar elements needed to really comprehend a language. This book fills in those gaps brilliantly, and helped me learn the important building blocks for constructing useful dialogue. The only reason the book doesn't get 5 stars from me is it doesn't get around the using past tense - which is one of the main reasons I bought it. Nevertheless, it's proven quite helpful. I'll be turning to other books in this same collection as I go along in learning Spanish and other languages.

Not for beginners. There are no answers for the worksheets. Book jumps right into sentences without explaining basics. Useless. Very disappointing.

It was a very good starter book. It works very well with a beginner Spanish class taught with an actual live instructor "In Person".I would recommend this book for those of you who are just starting out in your new language transition. Lots of luck.

"Basic Spanish" by Dorothy Richmond is the best book available for the beginning Spanish student. The two main goals of the book are to teach vocabulary and grammar. The vocabulary chosen for the book is overall very good. Many verbs are taught, which is different from many other books, which tend to under-emphasize verbs. Irregular verbs and stem changes are reviewed often enough that the learner can memorize when they apply. The book includes the various uses of the prepositions in Spanish and how to know when to use various prepositions, which is especially important since "por" and "para" have such diverse meanings.The grammar in the book is basic and taught thoroughly so that the learner is comfortable with the topics. Verb tenses are the major topic missing; a more advanced book will be needed for learning those. The grammar topics that are taught are constantly reviewed in the chapter reviews and in later exercises. The exercises also have solutions in the back of the book if you need them.Some of the other reviews say that this book is not for an absolute beginner, but I disagree. The only knowledge that is needed coming in is a basic understanding of English grammar. If you don't know what a direct object or the past tense is, then yes, this might not be basic enough, but in general I would recommend this for any learner, from middle school to adult.
