The publisher sent me a free copy of iPhone Basics in 30 Minutes in exchange for an honest review of the volume.When I purchased my iPhone 6 Plus, I also bought the 640 page iPhone, the Missing Manual that provided a wealth of information. However, I never spent the time to delve into that manual because it was more than a bit overwhelming/intimidating. Thus, I have had only a cursory knowledge of the basics – just enough to make a phone call and to point and shoot the camera without knowing how to adjust the exposure settings or edit the resulting pictures.The iPhone Basics in 30 Minutes was exactly the “how to/quick start” manual I needed! Of course it took me more than 30 minutes to read and digest with my iPhone by my side; but if you are looking for a manual that doesn’t waste words and that provides easy to read and understand instructions for both the 6 and 7 iPhone models, this is the book to get. Put simply, I highly recommend it, not only in terms of how to better use the phone and camera capabilities, but also because it provides useful tips on apps to purchase, how to access security features, saving battery power, freeing up storage space, and so much more.

First Sentence: The old man had heard of them, of course.Young Mycroft Holmes is fresh out of Cambridge University, engaged to the beautiful Georgiana Sutton, who was raised in Trinidad, and working for the Secretary of State for War. Holmes’ good friend Cyrus Douglas, a free black also from Trinidad, receives word that the bodies of children are being found drained of blood. Georgiana suddenly departs for her home. Mycroft and Douglas decide to follow, never expecting the danger into which they are sailing.The book surprises us from the very beginning. The descriptions are very atmospheric and mysterious. And what, one might ask, are the douen and the lougarou? Fortunately, we do learn the answers quite soon. The author creates very visual descriptions and wonderful metaphors; “Horse and rider moved as if they knew every little knot and turn of Greater London. … All the while they nosed out the cleanest thoroughfares and most deserted byways, as if they and the city were gears in the noblest Swiss watch.” We are also presented with very exciting, action-filled scenes incorporating the sights, sounds, and smells of London. We are presented with a very clear sense of place and time.This is no placid Mycroft, but neither is he a particularly effective man of action. What we do see, very early on, are his skills of observation. It is fascinating observing the details of his observations to see to how he reaches his conclusions. This is a very different Mycroft than we’ve known before. He is young, inexperienced and has the weaknesses of youth. Yet the intellect is there. Douglas is a very interesting character and one who one feels could only have been written as well by Abdul-Jabbar. The story of his family is a sad and painful reminder of this country’s history. Douglas, at 10 years older, serves to provide the maturity that Mycroft lacks.The story has plenty of action, but also provides a lesson in history that certainly isn’t part of any ordinary curriculum. While most of us assume slavery ended after the Civil War, in fact it did not. We also learn the difference between indentured servants and slaves. The plot includes an excellent twist which is very well done and part of a very interesting secondary theme; “He is Prichard’s theory of moral insanity come to life,” he mused. “A human being devoid of the common thread of human decency.”“Mycroft Holmes” is a fascinating read on so many levels; history, action, and character—with a very satisfactory ending. Thoroughly enjoyable. Anyone who likes Sherlock Homes stories should love this, but it is not just Sherlock with a new name. Mycroft does not exactly match previous views of Sherlock's older brother, but for the most part that was a good thing. This story was just new enough to keep interest up, but still keeps the style, twists, and turns we've come to love. The characters were three dimensional, interesting, and likable (as well as quirky). I think Kareem did a great job of updating an old favorite, and Mycroft's friend and companion Cyrus was a perfect addition. I really enjoyed him being more mature and quite adept in his own right. Watson made for good "comic relief", but Cyrus was an equal and quite believable partner in the adventure. If anyone in the story could have used a little more development, it would be Mycroft's love interest. There were just too many questions left open as to why she did what she did. Where the two men seemed very well filled out, she seemed more of an afterthought. In that one area, there is some room for improvement, but I'm still giving it a five star rating for all the pleasure I found in reading it.

Well-written but did not at all feel like the Mycroft Holmes from the original Doyle novels. Mycroft was supposed to be even smarter than Sherlock, just disinclined to chase criminal cases like his younger brother and not at all physical. The Mycroft character in this novel could not have been further from that description - although he is often referred to as brilliant by his friends, he never demonstrates this to the extent Sherlock does in other tales. This was a mildly interesting mystery novel but in my opinion not remotely a Holmesian tale.

As a huge fan of Holmes, and an avid reader of all high-quality pastiches I can get my hands on, I have to say I was really pleasantly surprised by this book.The story was strong, the characters were interesting, and the plot had a decent pace, and it appears the authors did a lot of work researching the historical background of their story.If I have any complaint at all, it was that the two main characters, Mycroft and his friend and companion Cyrus Douglas, are almost too noble, which pushes them at times to be a little one-dimensional. The authors have tried very hard to create a partnership dynamic that you as a reader will care about, but as yet "Mycroft Holmes and Mr. Douglas" doesn't have the strength and depth of "Sherlock Homes and Dr. Watson".But the highest praise I think anyone can give a book is that they wish there was even more to read when it comes to an end, and for me that was absolutely the case here. Mr. Abdul-Jabbar & Ms. Waterhouse - I'm hoping you have a sequel in the works, please?

I was not very familiar with Captain Marvel prior to the release of the recent film. This book is a production treasure for fans. Not only does it articulately describe the process through which the characters were visualized and created and re-created (which is a fascinating discussion in and of itself), but there are many fun historical tidbits relating to the characters, and how they tie in to the rest of the Marvel Universe. The book is gorgeous with full colored pictures and thorough explanatory text on the background and development/reasoning of this ground breaking character. It is a fun read whether you're a long time fan, new to the MCU or to this character. I didn't read any of the Marvel comics but have seen most of the MCU movies. The book is well written and a great value for the info it contains. If you love strong, complex female characters, or you're a comic fan this will be a great addition to your collection.

I love it! Really high quality prints and great art. It's a little bit pricey, but definitely worth it.

The cliffhanger set up in the Love Stage!!, Vol. 5, with Ryoma and Izumi trapped in the wilderness, isn’t played out as significantly as I hoped. However, the second half recalls a key part of Izumi’s personality that I’d almost forgotten about, one that puts the boys into a charming situation.First, though, the boys are missing, and everyone’s worried. The couple gets a sex scene, but emotionally, we spend more time with the older Shogo (Izumi’s brother) and Rei (the family’s manager) as they reassure each other. Thankfully, the rescue and the resulting deep feelings are played for comedy, which is in keeping with the welcome silliness of the series.The element I liked about Izumi that we hadn’t heard about in a while was his ridiculous desire to be a manga creator. He loves the idea so much, but he’s so immensely unqualified for it in every possible way. I know it’s easy for manga creators to make manga about making manga, but here, it fits into the entertainment world setting as yet another option.Izumi’s artistic failure (as we’ve seen before) is brought home drastically when he gets an apprenticeship, but it also provides a charming opportunity for Ryoma to demonstrate the depth of his feelings for him, by working to share his boyfriend’s interests. It’s a hilarious combination of fame in different fields. Izumi even finds a way to wind up contributing in a situation that calls back to the first volume. ~3.5/5We get the conclusion to the amnesia plot line here, and unsurprisingly the happy make up between Ryoma and Izumi. There's some sexy stuff here, and a lot of sweet moments. They exclaim their undying love to each other over and over.It's over the top, but I still really enjoy it. I think they're cute, and it's not too exaggerated so as not to be too much.After that, Izumi gets to be an assistant to his favorite manga-ka. Here, we get to see how useless he really is in making a manga. He's honestly awful at it, and it's also not a surprise that Ryoma is quite good at it. Since they're both quite busy working, they have to work around their schedules to make time to see each other.I actually love Rei and Sho even more than Ryoma and Izumi. I seriously find them adorable and I want to read their story, if there is one. We get at least two scenes between them in this volume, including a super adorable one at the beginning, that I am just in love with.This series is an easy, cute and sexy romance. Typical manga: Assertive man and submissive man. Love and struggle from partners.Good parts: Super cute, plot is good and interesting, main characters compliment each other, and one is attractive.Bad part: The submissive guy is TOO feminine. They wrote his parts as if he was a girl 87% (made this number up) of the time and he's drawn VERY girly. It's kind of part of the plot, but still. Good yaoi manga.

DeCarava created images that carry an emotional impact in their immediate relationship to the viewer, while also revealing less-than-visible terrains. DeCarava’s pioneering work privileged the aesthetic qualities of the medium, carrying the ability to reach the viewer as a counterpoint to the view of photography as mere chronicle or document and helping it to gain acceptance as an art form in its own right.Langston HughesLangston Hughes (1902–1967) was a poet, novelist, playwright, and social activist. Known worldwide as a key figure of the Harlem Renaissance, Hughes’s work has been significant in introducing black history and culture into the corpus of American cultural history as well as inspiring with his humanistic concerns, writers in Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, and South America. "The Sweet Flypaper of Life" is a classic volume. Langston Hughes storyline combined with the photography of Roy DeCarava's photography was groundbreaking in the 1950's and it is still relevant and worthy of praise today. My mediocre review is not based on the quality of Mr. Hughes writing or Mr. DeCarava's photographs, both of them being above reproach. What pretty much ruins this book for me is the small format of the book and the reproduction of the photographs.I have no idea what the original book looked like. This printing might be an attempt to recreate the original in size and print quality, however, the current book is crippled by the tiny size and dark, detail destroying reproduction of the photographs. Roy DeCarava's photographs document joy. The photos are alive with this joy but the dark, muddy printing conveys the exact opposite emotion. While Mr. Hughes' text continues to soar, Mr. DeCarava and his photographs deserve better.At some point in time, I hope a larger format edition of this book can be printed. With better reproduction. The pictures need to be presented larger with better detail that conveys the joyous subject matter. The book is still worth buying, especially at the low cover price, but I would have been willing to pay considerably more just to have a better presentation.

This is beautiful book. Langston Hudghes words, written after he viewed the fabulous photos by Roy DeCarava, are perfect. It's just a shame the books wasn't printed in a larger format. It's still absolutely worth purchasing.

Helped me find my hotels and other areas of interest

Nice

This product is what I expected. Unfortunately it arrived damage with a 3 inch rip in the middle of the map.

Great map. It also arrived quickly.

Met expectations

This map seems to be geared towards tourists. If you'll only be traveling within the toursit areas of the historic downtown, Miraflores, and Barranco then this is a great map for you. However if you wish to visit areas that most toursits skip like suburbs of San Borja or Chorrillos then you my friend are out of luck. Many useful places, for example the US Embassy, are covered by the street index, and a completely useless picture of some of the historic balconies that can be found downtown. The Pacific Ocean even makes an appearance on this map, wasting about 5% of the space, so they can display Barranco. I think they should separate the Lima map from the Central Peru Map so they can show more of the city on the back or change the name to Lima Tourist areas & Central Peru so people know what they're buying. FYI if you want to use the buses in Lima then I highly recommend the map Lima X4 Guia Distrital by the Lima 2000 group. Not sure if Amazon sells it but it can be found at bookstores in Lima. The fold out maps are small which is good so you don't disturb anyone on the bus, easy to read, highly detailed and cover just about all of Lima.

About the Author

Sid Brooks (1935–2007), a retired Air Force senior master sergeant who served his last duties in the military in Vietnam and the Air Force Academy, was the equipment manager of the San Diego Chargers from 1973 to 2000.
