Review
"This book on xeriscaping — gardening that requires no water from irrigation — documents the best of a new and inevitably necessary adaptation in landscaping. Landscape designer David Nolan compiles some of the most striking examples of minimal, cactus-and-agave-filled gardens that require little to no watering." -New York Magazine "The gardens are gorgeous and aspirational. Nolan seeks not to educate or proselytize about low-water gardening. With minimal text that sets the scene, he lets the photos do the talking. If you want to learn how the gardens save water through plant choice, grading, or other practicalities, this is not the book for you. It’s garden porn, pure and simple. Fans of modern design will especially love it." — Digging"Who knew dry could look so lush? San Francisco landscape designer Daniel Nolan presents 25 examples of drought-tolerant gardens of his and others’ designs with richly saturated photos by Caitlin Atkinson." — Society of Architectural Historians

Nolan's become one of the most in-demand garden designers in Northern California in a relatively short period of time because he approaches the relationship plants have with each other, their environments, and architecture from a fresh and modern perspective. What this book is NOT is a generic exploration of the histories and plants of famous xeriscaped properties. Rather, it's a curated presentation of how a well-designed, modern, drought-tolerant garden plays with color, texture, and scale; and how the plants in those gardens engage with the environments they're in.Most of the properties in this book are high-end residential homes, so you'll get a good amount of house porn with your purchase. But the fact that they're places people actually live in (most of the time), makes this book all the more relatable; It shows how good landscaping relates to architecture and enhances it.
If you like modern gardens and architectural plants, this is the book for you. I have followed Daniel Nolan's garden designs for a while and this book introduces me to more of his work as well as gardens designed by other designers with similar vision. Not only are the gardens beautiful, but the plants have been chosen for their low water usage and seemingly low maintenance. I am especially inspired by the use of negative space in many of the included designs.
I purchased this book to get ideas for high desert landscaping. I was disappointed. Although the photographs were beautiful, the information was not practical or applicable to my area and need.
The book feels like it primarily is an homage to the author, who has multiple projects throughout the book. Good photography, and some great inspiring looks, but not enough detailed imagery.
A beautiful book for inspiration, but very little valuable information behind the stunning pictures.
A terrific addition to any garden lovers collection. Not to be missed!
Beautiful images and great text.Received the book promptly
Daniel Nolan is an incredibly talented designer with a great sense of space, aesthetics, and horticulture. This book is a beautiful ensemble of landscape Design with a capital D! Every project sets a level of awe, inspiration and environmental sensitivity that all landscape / garden designers should reach to achieve.

From the Author
The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is the most authoritative text on Yoga as a practice. It is also known as the Yoga Darshana because it is the fundamental text of Yoga as a philosophy (though practice is discussed) as one of the six orthodox systems (darshanas) of Sanatana Dharma, the Eternal Religion. There is a temptation to designate a single book as the greatest or most important book in the the world. The Yoga Darshana is one of these, but in reality it is one of thirteen texts upon which the totality of authentic Sanatana Dharma is based. These are: the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Yoga Sutras. When those texts are studied and applied, then a person is a Sanatana Dharmi: not a "member" or "adherent" of Sanatana Dharma, but an embodiment of dharma, one who is moving toward the ultimate goal of liberation.

This is not my first review for Abbot Burke, nor is it the first book I've read of his! But knowing his work, he has such an amazing way of presenting potentially confusing concepts and explaining them in a useful, practical way. Not only that, but the breadth of his knowledge is vast, quoting not only from Hindu sacred texts but from the Dhammapada, the Bible, even really deep cuts from Theosophy.Abbot George's Yoga: Science of the Absolute has managed to unpack one of Yoga philosophy's foundational texts in an incredibly skillful way. Abbot George had provided a commentary that is not only deeply informative, making brilliant connections across multiple traditions, but eminently practical, leading the reader through the intricacies of the sutras with enlightening contextual explanations. More importantly, he describes how they can help one empower their own practice, their own sadhana. A fantastic work, truly valuable for those working towards enlightenment.
After practicing yoga for 41+ years, I found the Yoga: Science of the Absolute to be a "breath of fresh air" in today's yoga climate. Regardless of the genre of yoga, this work is key to one understanding that yoga is more than a physical practice; it is a unification of one's mind, body, and soul.
YOGA: SCIENCE OF THE ABSOLUTE COMMENTS ON: THE YOGA SUTRAS OF PATANJALI BY: ABBOT GEORGE BURKE SWAMI NIRMALANANDA GIRI Swami George's beautiful presentation and comments on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is rich reading for beginners and offers deep food for contemplation for seasoned beginners like myself and adepts in the practice of realization of self. This study gives a historical overview and practical teachings of the meaning of the sutras using original Sanskrit terminology with gentle English translations and a glossary. Abbot George's commentary of his personal experience with then extant sutra masters such as Neem Karoli Baba and their chelas in India was particularly interesting to me (there is a temple in Taos dedicated to him) as was the klesha phenomena of karma. Notwithstanding also the revelations of the minds recognition as “the witness†of the spiritual jewels of self revealing our “original and ever present state.†Setting self free into the eternal “NOW of spirit†or true self, as the mind becomes aware of the changeless through meditation. At the end of this excellent commentary a suggested reading guide is offered to further the experiences of ones own journey.Allan MacGillivray III
